Pittsburgh's Shocking NFL Draft Plan: Are You Prepared for This Health Crisis?

Pittsburgh is gearing up to host a massive influx of visitors as the city prepares for the NFL Draft, taking place from April 22 to April 25. In anticipation of this event, the local hospital systems are ensuring that both residents and visitors have access to necessary medical care. The two main health providers, Allegheny Health Network (AHN) and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), are collaborating with the NFL and city leaders to manage potential health needs effectively.

During the draft, AHN’s Downtown Express Care will extend its hours, operating from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. This facility will also offer virtual visits for patients with pre-scheduled appointments, ensuring that healthcare options remain accessible amid the event's hustle and bustle.

To further assist attendees, AHN will deploy a mobile clinic stationed in Market Square and a “medical fort” near Acrisure Stadium. This proactive approach aims to address potential medical situations that may arise during the draft.

Recognizing the event's impact on local traffic and accessibility, Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) is coordinating with city officials to ensure that patients can navigate the area smoothly, despite several street closures within the draft footprint. “AGH has a long history of effectively responding to events that bring high volumes of people to the North Side and patients to our doors,” noted Dr. Brent Rau, medical director of AGH’s emergency department. He expressed confidence in the hospital's ability to meet the community’s health needs throughout the draft period.

Additionally, UPMC is taking steps to enhance medical support during the event. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Donald Yealy announced that emergency medicine and sports medicine professionals will staff four medical aid stations located on the North Shore and at The Point. Medical professionals will also be actively patrolling the area on foot, collaborating with paramedics to ensure rapid response to any emergencies.
