Openmarkets' Bold Move: Why David Jenkins' DeFi Leadership Could Change Everything—Are You Ready to Miss Out?

Openmarkets, an Australian fintech firm, has appointed David Jenkins as its new Chief Product and Technology Officer. Jenkins will oversee the company’s product and technology operations as it seeks to expand its decentralized finance (DeFi) offerings through crypto trading and the tokenization of real-world assets. This pivotal role will also encompass the growth of products and services into international markets.
Jenkins brings over three decades of experience in the fintech, capital markets, and digital assets sectors. His prior roles include senior positions at well-known firms such as Pepperstone Group, Liquidnet, Bloomberg, Thomson Reuters, and Fidessa. His career has spanned across major financial hubs including Australia, Hong Kong, London, and New York.
At Pepperstone Group, Jenkins played a crucial role in initiating a global crypto exchange solution. Additionally, he served as the Fractional Chief Technology Officer and Product Lead at ImpactX Markets, a company backed by the Digital Finance Cooperative Research Centre.
Strategic Shift Towards DeFi
Jenkins’ appointment comes at a time when Openmarkets is aiming to integrate its existing trading and wealth management systems with DeFi products. The focus on crypto trading and the tokenization of real-world assets is central to this strategic initiative. Openmarkets’ CEO, Dan Jowett, emphasized the importance of Jenkins’ role in this endeavor, stating, “We’re pleased to welcome David at a pivotal time for Openmarkets as we execute on our DeFi strategy and capitalize on growing demand for products that bridge decentralized and traditional finance. David has a track record of execution having built and scaled financial technology platforms at the highest level.”
For his part, Jenkins expressed enthusiasm about joining the team, saying, “I’m delighted to join Openmarkets at a truly exciting time for the business. I’m looking forward to leading the technology and product function and helping the group deliver on its ambition to bridge the established wealth and trading infrastructure that the industry relies on and the decentralized finance products that are reshaping it.”
The timing of this appointment is significant, as Openmarkets has been experiencing broader client growth. Earlier this month, the firm was selected by BW Equities to provide a tailored wealth and trading technology system under a multi-year agreement. This arrangement will include wealth management software as a service, along with trading and execution tools for both domestic and international equities, with the execution component already live.
Founded in 2011 and based in Melbourne, BW Equities specializes in advising corporate clients within the natural resources, industrial, and technology sectors. The firm also handles capital raising, initial public offerings, and listed company transactions, while providing in-house research and sales and trading services to professional and institutional investors.
Openmarkets operates primarily from Sydney, with additional offices in Melbourne and Brisbane. The company is also expanding its presence in Asia and the United States, offering services such as trade execution, clearing and settlement, options risk management, and equity order management tools. Its clientele includes financial technology providers, dealer groups, private wealth advisers, stockbrokers, and high-volume traders.
In a further strategic move, Openmarkets is pursuing a merger and business combination with the special purpose acquisition company Lake Superior Acquisition Corp. If successfully completed, this deal could result in the combined Openmarkets Group being listed on the Nasdaq.
As Jenkins steps into his new role, he will be responsible for both product development and the underlying technology estate, as Openmarkets seeks to extend its established trading and wealth management business into the increasingly competitive digital asset markets and tokenized financial products.
