NIU’s Shocking Road Test at UMass: What They Discovered Will Leave You Speechless!

DeKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University (NIU) women's tennis team faces a challenging matchup this weekend as they travel to take on the Mid-American Conference (MAC) leaders, UMass, on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT. The Huskies enter the contest with a record of 15 wins and 6 losses, but have struggled in recent matches, dropping two consecutive contests to Buffalo and Western Michigan, both by a score of 5-2.

With only four matches left in the season, NIU is currently tied for seventh in the MAC standings, trailing teams like Western Michigan (1-1 MAC), Miami (2-2 MAC), and Bowling Green (1-2 MAC). The Huskies will also be competing against Miami on Friday, April 3, and Bowling Green on Sunday, April 12, which are critical matchups as they seek to improve their standing in the conference.

Senior player Nataly Ninova from Palma de Mallorca, Spain, made headlines last weekend by securing a singles win against Western Michigan. This victory boosted her career wins total to 162, putting her just two wins away from breaking the record for most career wins in NIU history, previously held by Nelle Youel with 163 wins between 2011 and 2015. This season, Ninova has tallied 15 singles victories, leading her team.

Hot on her heels are freshman Rebeca Garcia Miralles and sophomore Lucia Yecora, who have recorded 13 and 12 singles wins, respectively. Garcia Miralles, who hails from Castellón, Spain, is currently enjoying a strong streak, boasting a remarkable 9-1 record in her last 10 matches. Meanwhile, Yecora, from Seville, Spain, has been a reliable performer, securing 10 of her 12 singles victories playing at the No. 3 position.

On the other side of the court, UMass comes into this match with a strong 12-3 overall record and a perfect 4-0 in the MAC, having won their last five matches. Last weekend, the Minutewomen narrowly defeated both Miami and Ball State, each time winning by a score of 4-3. Notably, UMass dropped the doubles point against Ball State but rallied to clinch four straight singles victories, demonstrating their resilience and competitive spirit. Their three losses this season were to Boston College, No. 60 Dartmouth, and No. 73 Harvard.

This weekend's match is crucial for both teams, especially for NIU as they look to regain momentum after recent losses. With senior leadership from players like Ninova and promising contributions from newcomers like Garcia Miralles, the Huskies are poised to make a push in the final stretch of the season. As they face off against the formidable UMass, fans will be keenly watching to see if NIU can turn the tide and secure a significant victory on the road.
