ROCHELLE, Ill. – In a competitive showdown on April 9, the Northern Illinois University (NIU) men's tennis team faced a disappointing 5-2 loss against Western Michigan. This match was significant as both teams had recently qualified for the Mid-American Conference Tournament, highlighting the intensity of their rivalry. The season series is now evenly split, with each team claiming victories at home, underscoring the unpredictable nature of collegiate tennis.
The Huskies started strong, securing their 17th doubles point of the season with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. The pair of Iker Gaztambide Arrastia and Federico Scotuzzi recorded a solid 6-3 win, marking their third win together this season. Meanwhile, the duo of Lorenzo Leti Messina and Nikola Puntaric clinched the doubles point in a dramatic finish, edging out their opponents with a 7-5 victory.
In singles play, the standout performer was Gaztambide Arrastia, who is currently ranked No. 63 in the nation. The senior from Pamplona, Spain, showcased his skill by securing his seventh consecutive win, defeating Alex Antonopoulos in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. With an impressive overall singles record of 18-2 and an 8-1 mark in conference play, Gaztambide Arrastia has solidified his position as a key player for NIU this season.
The Huskies are set to conclude their season on Saturday against Ball State, a match that will also serve as a tribute to their graduating seniors. This contest will take place at the Nelson Tennis Center at Chick Evans Field House or at Rochelle Township High School, depending on weather conditions. As the season draws to a close, the recognition of senior players will not only celebrate their contributions to the team but also mark a pivotal transition for the program as they look ahead to future seasons.
While the recent loss to Western Michigan stings, the season has been filled with significant accomplishments and growth for the Huskies. As they prepare for their final match, the focus will be on building momentum and finishing strong, ensuring that the lessons learned throughout the season will serve them well in future competitions.
