Nikola Topic’s SHOCKING NBA Comeback: What OKC Blue Fans NEVER Saw Coming!
The journey of Nikola Topic, the rookie guard for the Oklahoma City Thunder, has been anything but conventional. After experiencing a turbulent start to his NBA career, marked by injuries and setbacks, Topic has shown remarkable resilience. Following a month-long stint in the G League with the OKC Blue, he returned to the NBA floor on Thursday night against the Los Angeles Lakers.
In that game, the 20-year-old Serbian showcased his potential over 12 minutes of action. Although he managed only two points, with one basket from two attempts, he also contributed two rebounds and two assists in what turned out to be a dominant 43-point victory for the Thunder. Notably, he took charge of the point guard role throughout the fourth quarter, demonstrating confidence as he integrated into Oklahoma City's offensive strategy.
This was Topic's first NBA appearance since February 25 against the Detroit Pistons, during which he recorded four assists and two rebounds without scoring. Following that game, the Thunder opted to send him down to the G League to gain valuable playing time as the roster was bolstered by returning players from injury.
In his time with the OKC Blue, Topic became a standout player. Over 13 games, 11 of which he started, he maintained impressive averages of 18.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, 7.8 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. His efficiency was striking, converting at a rate of 55.2% overall and an impressive 46.5% from beyond the arc on 3.3 attempts per game. These numbers reflect the tremendous talent and potential that Thunder General Manager Sam Presti recognized when selecting Topic as the 12th overall pick in the 2024 draft.
Throughout the season, in six NBA appearances, Topic has averaged 3.0 points, 2.0 assists, and 1.7 rebounds in 10.8 minutes per game. With the playoffs looming, he has five crucial games left to acclimatize himself to the demands of NBA competition before rotations tighten. This experience, despite the likelihood of not being part of the playoff rotation, is invaluable for both Topic and the Thunder's future.
Topic's path to this point has not been without its challenges. Late in the NBA draft process, he tore his ACL, which significantly impacted his draft stock and sidelined him for his entire rookie season. However, the horizon appeared brighter when his team won the NBA Championship, and he impressed during the NBA Summer League.
Just when things seemed to be looking up, another personal setback occurred as he was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Remarkably, Topic did not let this adversity derail his career. He made his NBA debut on February 12 against the Milwaukee Bucks and has shown consistent improvement with each successive game, illustrating his mental fortitude.
While it remains uncertain how much playing time Topic will see in the upcoming playoffs, the experience he gains now could be a pivotal part of his development. This rookie is not just another young player; he embodies resilience and potential, making him a player to watch as his career unfolds.
