INWOOD, W.Va. — A member of the West Virginia National Guard is on the road to recovery following a tragic shooting incident that took place in Washington, D.C., on November 26. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe sustained a head wound during the ambush, which has since shown signs of improvement. “He’s beginning to look more like himself,” stated West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey, who quoted Wolfe's parents in his remarks.

The shooting occurred as Wolfe and Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom were patrolling near a subway station, just three blocks from the White House. Unfortunately, Beckstrom lost her life from her injuries the following day, highlighting the tragic nature of the event. Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national residing in Washington state, has been charged with murder in connection with the confrontation and has pleaded not guilty.

Wolfe's family reports that he is expected to remain in acute care for an additional two to three weeks. A vigil was held for him at his alma mater, Musselman High School, on Friday night, demonstrating the community's support and concern.

At just 24 years old, Wolfe hails from Martinsburg, West Virginia, located approximately 75 miles northwest of the nation’s capital. He is a member of the Force Support Squadron of the 167th Airlift Wing of the West Virginia Air National Guard, having joined in 2019—the same year he graduated from high school. According to Principal Alicia Riggleman of Musselman High School, Wolfe was an engaged and accomplished student. “He embodied the Applemen spirit, contributing positively to our school community both academically and athletically,” Riggleman stated, emphasizing Wolfe's exemplary character.

Since early 2023, Wolfe has also worked as a lineman for Frontier Communications. His dual commitment to serving in the National Guard while maintaining a civilian job reflects a growing trend among young Americans who balance military service with their professional lives.
