Motorola G-Series Phone Blast Raises Concerns Over Device Safety
In what began as a routine day for a user in India quickly turned alarming when a Motorola G-series smartphone reportedly exploded inside his pocket. A video shared on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) captured the moment: the individual felt a sudden surge of heat, followed by a loud bang. Almost instantly, the device caught fire, burning a hole in his pants and leaving him stunned. Bystanders quickly rushed to assist as smoke billowed from the damaged phone. Fortunately, the user did not sustain any severe injuries, but the incident left him visibly shaken.
Images circulating online show the charred remains of the Motorola G-series phone, believed to be the Moto G54 5G. This frightening occurrence has reignited concerns regarding smartphone battery safety, overheating issues, and the potential hazards of carrying devices in pockets. This incident is not isolated. Over the years, smartphones have occasionally come under scrutiny for battery-related issues, particularly lithium-ion batteries, which, while efficient, can pose risks if damaged or manufactured poorly. While companies implement rigorous safety standards, the reality remains that incidents like these can occur, leading to public anxiety and distrust.
In a separate experience shared on X, another user expressed frustration with the customer service provided by Motorola after his device, also a Motorola phone, became unresponsive. After approximately eight to nine months of use, he sought help at the Motorola Exclusive Service Centre in Nehru Place. His visit turned out to be disappointing, with reports of a poorly maintained facility. The service center lacked a lift, making it inaccessible for many, and was overcrowded due to being jointly operated by Motorola and Lenovo.
The user recounted difficulties like the absence of a display to show token numbers and inadequate seating arrangements—three chairs, with two designated for laptop customers and one for smartphone users. When staff eventually appeared, they reportedly called customers in a haphazard manner, undermining the token system entirely. After submitting his paperwork, he was informed he would receive a call about his phone's issue by Monday, but by Thursday, he had yet to hear back, illustrating a significant lapse in customer support.

The Moto G54 5G itself boasts a 6.5-inch LED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and Full HD+ resolution (2400 x 1080 pixels), powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 7020 processor. It features a 6000mAh battery with 33W fast charging and a dual-camera setup, including a 50-megapixel main camera and a 16-megapixel front camera. With prices in India starting at Rs 15,999 for the 8GB RAM version and Rs 18,999 for the 12GB RAM model, the phone is positioned as an affordable option in the competitive smartphone market.
As more incidents involving smartphone safety come to light, consumers are right to be cautious. The combination of a powerful battery and a device often stored close to the body presents potential risks. This situation calls for stricter regulations and improved oversight in device manufacturing, ensuring that user safety remains a priority for manufacturers. The recent incidents serve as a reminder that while technology enhances our lives, it can also pose unforeseen dangers.
