Marvel's Epic Twist: 5 Iconic Heroes Swap Superpowers for Soccer! Will They Succeed?
The FIFA World Cup 2026 kicks off this June, and in a vibrant celebration of the summer's soccer frenzy, Marvel's most beloved heroes are joining the action with a special series of covers titled “Marvel Soccer Variant Covers.” This unique collection, part of Marvel’s monthly release from the Stormbreakers team, showcases iconic characters like the Avengers, X-Men, and Spider-Man engaging in exhilarating soccer matches, complete with distinctive jersey designs.
Marvel has described these covers as capturing "kinetic action that leaps off the page," a fitting tribute to both the dynamic world of soccer and the high-energy narratives typical of Marvel comics. In engaging scenes, fans can expect to see their favorite heroes scoring goals, executing dramatic saves, and, in Deadpool's case, humorously arguing with the referee.
The current lineup of Marvel's Stormbreakers features an impressive array of talent, including artists such as Alessandro Cappuccio (Ultimate Wolverine), Netho Diaz (X-Men), Simone Di Meo (X-Men of Apocalypse), Juan Frigeri (Ultimates), Gurihiru (Jeff the Land Shark), Jonas Scharf (Ultimate Endgame), Geoff Shaw (Wade Wilson: Deadpool), and Luciano Vecchio (Uncanny X-Men). This collective represents a new wave of comic book artistry, known for their exceptional skills and creativity in breathing life into the Marvel universe.
Launched in 2020, Marvel's Stormbreakers initiative evolved from the Young Guns program, which over the last 15 years has recognized 36 emerging artists who have gone on to illustrate some of Marvel's most significant events and series. Notable past recipients include industry luminaries such as Steve McNiven, Jim Cheung, Sara Pichelli, and Ryan Stegman, each of whom has left a lasting impact on the comic book landscape.
Importantly, the “Marvel Soccer Variant Covers” are meant to be lighthearted; they do not represent an official partnership with FIFA. For fans of soccer—who may still refer to it as “football”—these covers are a fun addition to any collection and provide a fresh take on familiar characters, placing them in a lively sporting context.
Comic book aficionados and soccer enthusiasts alike will want to keep an eye out for these covers, with the collection set to be released across eight different titles. Here’s a sneak peek at the upcoming releases:
