Bulldog Baseball Dominates Opening Weekend

The LA Tech Bulldogs baseball team achieved a thrilling 4-0 record to start their season, marking the third consecutive year and the seventh time under head coach Lane Burroughs since 2017 that they have opened with such a strong performance. The Bulldogs showcased their prowess against Houston Christian University (HCU), winning decisively over three days in Ruston, Louisiana.

Friday’s opener saw Tech dominate HCU with a score of 17-4, highlighted by two grand slams from Ruston native Cade Patterson. Saturday continued the winning trend with doubleheader victories of 5-3 and 6-4. On Sunday, the Bulldogs sealed a commanding 11-0 win, achieving their second run-rule victory of the weekend and concluding the series in style.

“Just extremely proud of this team,” Burroughs stated, reflecting on the team’s performance amid the typical nerves associated with the opening weekend. “We had two run-rule games that we played extremely well, and then we had two gut-check games yesterday that could’ve gone either way, and we were able to pull those out as well.”

The series featured standout performances, including a stellar pitching debut by Brooks Roberson, who tossed six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. The Bulldogs’ next match will be on Wednesday, February 18, against McNeese State University at the Love Shack.

Tech Softball Shines at Mardi Gras Mambo

LA Tech softball team wrapped up the Mardi Gras Mambo tournament with a solid 3-2 record, improving their season record to 8-2. The weekend was marked by dramatic moments, including a walk-off home run from Reagan Marchant in a 4-3 win over New Mexico on Friday, and a notable 7-4 victory over Georgia State on Sunday.

“This week we had many challenges,” remarked head coach Josh Taylor. “There were times that our offense was explosive, and there were times that we fell short of our offensive capabilities.” Marchant, along with teammates Reese Torres, Aleah Brooks, and Bradi Gallaway, stepped up as key run producers throughout the tournament.

In the decisive Sunday game against Georgia State, LA Tech capitalized on home runs from Marchant and Torres, contributing significantly to their scoring. Ruby Fidge shined in the circle, pitching five innings and allowing only one unearned run, showcasing the team’s solid defensive efforts that Taylor hopes will continue as the season progresses.

LA Tech will host Northwestern State for their home opener on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before continuing their series against ULM and Southern Miss later in the week.

Grambling State Faces Tough Competition

Grambling State University softball team had a challenging outing at the Lion Invitational in Commerce, Texas. The Tigers fell to Missouri State with a lopsided score of 9-1, which underscored the competitive nature of the tournament. Despite their struggles, GSU managed to secure an 8-1 victory against SEMO earlier in the tournament.

On Friday, GSU started slow against Missouri State, falling behind 3-0 and only managing a single run from a wild pitch. The team saw a solitary hit from Tavia Leadon, while Zoe Roland pitched for 4.2 innings, ending with seven earned runs. The team’s next steps involve building on their strengths as they head deeper into their schedule this season.
