Lakers' 2025-26 Season: Why This Shocking Twist Could Change Everything for the Team!

The Los Angeles Lakers’ postseason aspirations took a significant hit recently as injuries sidelined two pivotal players, Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, before the conclusion of the regular season. Once heralded as one of the hottest teams in the NBA, the Lakers are now viewed as the most vulnerable among the top six seeds in the Western Conference.
This shift in perception has transformed the Lakers into a potential target for teams seeking a more favorable matchup in the first round of the playoffs. Yet, coach JJ Redick is determined not to let the struggles of the end of the season overshadow the accomplishments of the team throughout the year.
“Let’s not discredit what this group did for the regular season, regardless of what happens in the playoffs,” Redick stated before the team’s final regular-season game against the Utah Jazz. “To clinch homecourt and to win 52 games, possibly 53 games, and deal with the amount of adversity we had—not just with injuries, but with the loudness that surrounds our team—it's a credit to our players and our staff for persevering.”
Indeed, the Lakers entered the season with championship aspirations, a hallmark expectation for any team bearing the storied franchise's name. Despite the likelihood of those dreams dimming with injuries, Redick remains optimistic, asserting that the Lakers will continue to fight for their playoff dreams until they are eliminated.
As they prepared for the playoffs, Redick highlighted the importance of acknowledging the team’s achievements: “We’ve had to manage the expectations of the Lakers and the negativity that surrounds every loss. Our group has managed that well.”
The Lakers secured a top-four seed in the Western Conference and guaranteed homecourt advantage for their first-round matchup. With their win total hovering at 52, and possibly reaching 53, this marks the most victories in an 82-game regular season for the Lakers since the 2010-11 season, when they triumphed with 57 wins.
This success came despite challenges, including Doncic missing 18 games and James missing the first 14 due to sciatica. Reaves played a career-low 51 games, further complicating the team’s dynamics. The vision for the Lakers included a Big Three of Doncic, Reaves, and LeBron James, but they only shared the court for 560 minutes across 29 games this season—an unfortunate reality for Lakers fans who were eager to see their star trio in action.
“I’m extremely proud of our team, our players, and our coaches for dealing with the entire NBA season,” Redick remarked. He acknowledged that while some teams may experience a consistently smooth journey, most endure ups and downs that test their mettle throughout the season.
The Lakers surpassed external expectations this season. Predicted to finish with a win total in the mid-to-high 40s, they have outperformed those forecasts significantly. Redick pointed out, “I know none of you guys had us in the top four to start this season. Most people had us as a play-in team or even worse.”
As they head into the playoffs, the Lakers carry the weight of their storied history and the high hopes of their fanbase. The injuries to Doncic and Reaves have cast a shadow over their prospects, but with a solid foundation built over the regular season, there remains a glimmer of hope for Lakers fans. The team’s ability to adapt and grow amidst adversity may serve as their most valuable asset moving forward.
