Kevin Petersen's Stunning Exit: What 20 Years in Assembly Really Means for Waupaca's Future!

WAUPACA, Wis. (WBAY) - After two decades of service, State Legislator Kevin Petersen has announced that he will not seek re-election, marking the end of his tenure in the Wisconsin Assembly. Petersen represents the 57th Assembly District, which includes the communities of Waupaca, Wautoma, and Redgranite. He was first elected to the Assembly in 2006.

Reflecting on his time in office, Petersen noted the stark contrast between his initial election period and the current financial landscape of Wisconsin. “When I was first elected, the state had an approximate $1.6 billion deficit, nearly $0 in the rainy-day fund, and a weak job market with a collapsing unemployment insurance fund,” he said. Fast forward to today, he highlighted significant progress, stating that Wisconsin now boasts a balanced budget, a projected $2.5 billion surplus, and a rainy-day fund of approximately $2 billion. He also pointed out that the state’s retirement pension is fully funded and recognized among the top 25 pensions globally.

Currently serving as Speaker Pro Tempore, Petersen has presided over the Assembly in the absence of Speaker Robin Vos and has been responsible for swearing in newly elected members. He expressed gratitude to the 99 lawmakers who unanimously elected him to this position in each of the last two sessions. “Although we didn’t always agree on politics, I deeply appreciate the power you placed in me to uphold the integrity of the institution,” he remarked.

Petersen is now looking forward to spending more time with his family—his wife, Michelle, daughter, and parents. He extended heartfelt thanks to his wife for supporting him through his over 20 years of Navy deployments and countless nights away in Madison. In closing, he expressed his appreciation to his constituents: “It has been a privilege and honor representing you in the legislature. I am humbled and honored.”
