Kansas State's Shocking Coaching Move: Why Fans Are FURIOUS Over Collin Klein's Appointment!

Kansas State University has made a significant move in its football program by hiring former quarterback and current Texas A&M offensive coordinator Collin Klein as its head coach. The announcement came on Thursday night, just a day after Chris Klieman announced his abrupt retirement after seven seasons with the Wildcats.
Klein, 36, has deep roots at Kansas State, having been a standout player under the legendary coach Bill Snyder. He was a Heisman Trophy finalist during his collegiate years and has been viewed by fans as a potential future leader for the program since he began his coaching career. His coaching journey began in 2014 under Snyder, followed by a stint at Northern Iowa before returning to Kansas State in 2017, where he served as quarterbacks coach. Following Snyder's second retirement, Klieman retained Klein on staff, recognizing his potential.
In 2022, Klein was promoted to offensive coordinator, a role in which he thrived. Under his guidance, the Wildcats captured the Big 12 title, averaging an impressive 32.3 points and 418.8 yards per game during that season. His success caught the attention of other programs, leading to his hiring at Texas A&M as offensive coordinator under coach Mike Elko.
While Klein shifts his focus back to Kansas State, he is expected to continue working with the Aggies during this year’s College Football Playoff, should they be selected. Texas A&M is currently positioned seventh in the latest College Football Playoff rankings released on Tuesday night. The Aggies enjoyed a solid season, finishing with an 8-5 record last year and starting this season strong with an 11-0 record before a recent loss to Texas eliminated them from the running for the Southeastern Conference title.
Elko expressed his appreciation for Klein's contributions, stating, “I think when you hire really good people, opportunities like that will come. You appreciate that people want to stay part of your program until the next big opportunity comes.” This sentiment highlights the importance of creating a solid coaching environment that fosters growth, both for players and staff.
Klein's commitment to Kansas State runs deeper than just his professional ties; he met his wife, Shalin, during his time in Manhattan, Kansas. She is also connected to the program as the daughter of former Wildcats and NFL linebacker Gary Spani, who played basketball for K-State.
Before the Kansas State position opened, Klein was reportedly a candidate for the South Florida job following the hiring of Alex Golesh by Auburn. However, he withdrew his candidacy when it became clear that the Wildcats would be looking for a new coach. This swift decision underscores his dedication to returning to his roots at Kansas State.
As Kansas State athletic director Gene Taylor noted earlier this week, the hiring process would be quick and efficient. He emphasized the need to act swiftly for the sake of the players and staff, stating, “I think we should make it happen quickly for the players and the staff so they know where the next direction is.” With Klein taking the helm, the Wildcats can look forward to a new era under a familiar face, one that embodies the program's history and aspirations for future success.
