Researchers analyzed telephone survey data from a national sample of 396,261 U.S. adults collected in 2019, revealing that 44% of respondents reported walking as the activity they engaged in most frequently. This trend aligns with findings from a similar study conducted in 2011, indicating a consistent preference for walking across the nation.
While walking remains a beloved pastime, experts caution that it may not be sufficient for everyone to achieve optimal fitness levels. The study highlights that even among regular walkers, only 25% meet the recommended guidelines for both aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities, while approximately 22% do not meet either standard. This raises important questions about how well walking alone serves as a comprehensive fitness solution.
Interestingly, the survey also revealed differences in physical activity preferences between urban and rural residents. Urban dwellers tend to engage in activities like running, weightlifting, and dancing, while those in rural areas often enjoy gardening, hunting, and fishing. These variations may reflect the varying access to recreational opportunities and the cultural norms surrounding physical activity in different regions. Urban residents were found to be more likely to meet physical activity guidelines than their rural counterparts.
Addressing Fitness Needs Across Regions
As the lead author of the study, Christiaan Abildso, PhD, a physical activity specialist at West Virginia University, emphasized the need for tailored fitness solutions. “We see a need to continue to support our partners in small towns and rural places by creating physical, social, and cultural conditions that support physical activity,” Abildso stated. He urged community leaders to consider how their efforts impact physical activity levels and to work towards fostering environments that encourage movement.
To enhance fitness opportunities, Abildso proposed several actionable steps for community leaders, including:

The significance of integrating varied forms of exercise is supported by experts like Michael Fredericson, MD, a professor of orthopedic surgery at Stanford Medicine. Fredericson, who was not involved in the study, remarked that promoting accessible forms of exercise is essential. Walking can indeed offer substantial cardiovascular benefits; however, there are additional advantages to incorporating more vigorous activities into one’s routine.
A 2023 review highlighted that walking between 8,000 and 10,000 steps daily can lead to meaningful cardiovascular health improvements and psychological well-being. Furthermore, gardening, often overlooked, can also be considered a moderate physical activity that supports weight management and strength building while providing benefits like increased vitamin D exposure.
Despite the myriad of benefits associated with walking and gardening, activities like hunting and fishing may not contribute adequately to fitness unless they involve significant walking or hiking. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that adults engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity weekly, coupled with two days of muscle-strengthening activities.
Family medicine physician David Cutler, MD, emphasizes the importance of adhering to these guidelines. “There should be greater emphasis for all adults to meet the minimum exercise guideline of 150 minutes per week,” Cutler advised. He suggests that individuals should diversify their fitness routines, moving beyond walking to include activities like running, cycling, swimming, and resistance training. Incorporating exercises that strengthen core muscles can enhance stability and posture, while consistent stretching can improve range of motion and vascular health.
