The research firm anticipates that Apple will maintain its lead in global smartphone shipments from 2025 through 2029, fueled by increasing competition from both Apple and emerging Chinese original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
Counterpoint's analysis highlights Apple’s impressive performance, especially in the third quarter of 2025. The tech giant is projected to capture a global market share of 19.4%, marking a notable return to the top spot for the first time since 2011. Meanwhile, Samsung is expected to see a modest growth of 4.6% year-over-year, resulting in a global share of 18.7% and relegating it to second place.
The surge in Apple’s shipments, which exceeded expectations with a 9% increase year-over-year, can largely be attributed to the launch of the iPhone 17 series during this peak sales period. Notably, sales figures reveal a strong performance across key markets: the iPhone 17 series recorded a 12% increase in the U.S., an 18% rise in China, and a 7% boost in Japan compared to its predecessor, the iPhone 16 series.
Looking ahead, Counterpoint predicts that Apple will continue to lead the market through the end of the decade, bolstered by rebounding shipments and the anticipated introduction of the first foldable iPhone. This expansion is expected to diversify Apple’s offerings across various price tiers, including the introduction of their budget-friendly 'e' series.
On the other hand, Samsung is not without its own growth prospects. The South Korean company is expected to see an approximate 5% increase in shipments, supported by a resilient supply chain and strengthened momentum from its popular A series smartphones, particularly in developing markets such as Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and India.
