Is Main Event's Shocking Move to Dominate Long Island's Entertainment Scene a Game-Changer or a Total Fail?

Main Event Entertainment, a growing family entertainment chain, is set to open its first location in New York State this spring. The new venue will be located at Tanger Outlets Deer Park and is scheduled to open on May 18. This 46,189-square-foot facility will be situated at 1150 The Arches Circle, adjacent to Regal Cinemas, as reported by Newsday.
Designed to cater to families, the Main Event center will feature an array of activities including bowling, laser tag, arcade games, billiards, and gravity ropes courses. In addition to entertainment options, visitors can enjoy food and drinks, making it an all-in-one destination for family outings.
Founded in 1998 and headquartered in Coppell, Texas, Main Event operates a total of 64 centers across 22 states. The company was acquired by Dave & Buster’s Entertainment Inc. in June 2022 for $835 million. While Dave & Buster's is known for its arcade and restaurant offerings, Main Event is positioned as a more family-friendly alternative.
Despite its expansion efforts, Dave & Buster's has been facing significant financial challenges. According to a December note from Jake Bartlett, a senior equity research analyst at Truist Securities, the company has experienced declines in net income for the past five consecutive quarters. Specifically, a net loss of $42.1 million was reported for the third quarter of fiscal 2025, compared to a loss of $32.7 million in the same period a year earlier.
Sales at established locations also fell by 4% during the most recent third quarter, although this represents a smaller decline than the 7.7% dip seen in the comparative period from 2023 to 2024. To turn the tide, the company announced a "Back to Basics" strategy aimed at revitalizing its offerings and customer experience. This initiative includes reinstating popular menu items, increasing the frequency of new game introductions, and streamlining the building remodeling process.
Last July, Tarun Lal, formerly president of KFC U.S., was appointed as CEO to lead this turnaround effort. During a December earnings call, Lal noted improvements in performance, stating, "This work bore fruits over the course of the third quarter as we saw sequential improvement each month." In the final month of that quarter, sales were down only about 1%.
These developments come at a time when the restaurant and entertainment sectors have been grappling with shifting consumer spending habits. Bartlett highlighted that the renewed focus on enhancing game investments and improving food and beverage options has instilled optimism looking into 2026. The company plans to integrate about 10 new games into its locations, consistent with the previous year's strategy.
As the entertainment landscape evolves, the entry of Main Event into Long Island marks a significant moment for family-oriented entertainment options in New York. Whether it can thrive amidst fierce competition from other venues like Topgolf and Round1 Bowling & Arcade remains to be seen, but it certainly adds a new dynamic to the local entertainment scene.
