According to Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Head of Life Sciences at Anthropic, these new features build upon the launch of Claude for Life Sciences last October. That initial rollout transformed the chatbot into a proactive research assistant for clinicians and scientists involved in tasks such as drug discovery. With this new focus, Anthropic aims to extend its benefits to patients, helping them better navigate their health.
“When connected, Claude can summarize users’ medical history, explain test results in plain language, detect patterns across fitness and health metrics, and prepare questions for appointments,” the company stated in a recent blog post. The ultimate goal is to make discussions between patients and their healthcare providers more productive and to ensure users are well-informed about their health.
In a recent announcement, OpenAI noted that its standard version of ChatGPT sees hundreds of millions of health- and wellness-related inquiries weekly. This highlights the immense potential for AI tools to address everyday medical questions and assist users in understanding their health patterns over time.
Kauderer-Abrams emphasized that Claude for Healthcare can demystify complex medical reports, provide users with the ability to double-check doctors’ decisions, and synthesize medical information for billions of people globally who currently lack reliable access.
Privacy remains a critical concern in healthcare, and both Anthropic and OpenAI are keen to reassure users about data security. Anthropic has implemented privacy protections into Claude for Healthcare, stating that shared healthcare data will not be stored in memory or used to train future iterations of the model. However, the rapid expansion of AI tools in healthcare raises pertinent questions regarding their appropriateness for delivering medical advice. Recent legal challenges faced by companies like Google LLC and Character Technologies Inc., which reportedly influenced the mental health of a teenager who subsequently took their life, underscore the need for caution in this space.
Anthropic has issued a disclaimer asserting that Claude can make mistakes and should not be relied upon as a substitute for qualified medical advice. Kauderer-Abrams advised, “For critical use cases where every detail matters, you should absolutely still check the information. We’re not claiming that you can completely remove the human from the loop. We see it as a tool to amplify what human experts can do.”
