Illinois Shocks Houston with a Last-Minute Play—Will This Game Change March Madness Forever?

HOUSTON — In a significant upset during the NCAA Tournament, third-seeded Illinois showcased its defensive prowess, defeating last year’s national runner-up, the second-seeded Houston Cougars, 65-55 in the South Region semifinals on Thursday night. The victory marked a critical moment in the tournament as Illinois eliminated a formidable opponent, setting the stage for an anticipated matchup against ninth-seeded Iowa on Saturday. This will be Illinois's 11th Elite Eight appearance and their second in three seasons under head coach Brad Underwood.

The game, played just over two miles from the University of Houston's campus, had the Cougars excited to perform in front of their home crowd. However, the night was marred by poor shooting, as Houston struggled to find their rhythm. The team ended the game with a disappointing 34% shooting percentage, their lowest-scoring performance of the season. Star freshman point guard Kingston Flemings, who has aspirations of being an NBA lottery pick, managed only 11 points on 4-of-10 shooting, while teammate Milos Uzan fared worse, hitting just 2 of 11 shots.

Despite Houston’s struggles, Illinois did not dominate in terms of shooting either, finishing well below their season average of 84.7 points per game. However, they were effective enough to secure the win. David Mirkovic was pivotal for Illinois, achieving a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Teammate Keaton Wagler also stepped up, contributing 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Andrej Stojakovic, son of three-time NBA All-Star Peja Stojakovic, added an additional 13 points, much to the delight of the fans who made the trip from Illinois.

As the game progressed, Illinois took control in the second half, breaking open a close contest with a remarkable 17-0 run that put them ahead 44-26 with about 12 minutes left on the clock. This offensive explosion included crucial contributions from Jake Davis, who scored five points during the run, including a 3-pointer. Mirkovic and Ben Humrichous capped the burst with consecutive shots from long range.

For Houston, the drought was palpable, as they missed seven consecutive shots while Illinois built its lead. Uzan finally halted the scoring slump with a 3-pointer more than six minutes into the half, but it proved too little, too late. As the game ticked down to its final moments, the Illinois supporters erupted into cheers, celebrating a well-earned victory that sent the Cougars packing.

This loss for Houston adds to the heartbreak of last season, where they came tantalizingly close to winning the championship. For Illinois, the focus now shifts to their upcoming clash with Iowa, another Big Ten rival, as they seek to secure a spot in the Final Four. As the tournament heats up, the stakes continue to rise, and Illinois will look to leverage their defensive strengths and capitalize on their offensive potential in the next round.
