Idaho's First Pro Soccer Club Debuts This Saturday—Will They Shock Fans With a Historic Upset?

Idaho is making history this weekend as Athletic Club Boise, the state’s first professional men’s soccer team, prepares to kick off its inaugural match. The team is set to face off against Sarasota Paradise in Florida on Saturday, showcasing a new chapter for soccer in the Gem State.

Head coach Nate Miller emphasized the importance of preparation, stating, “You only get one preseason, so right now we're in work mode.” The team has been training intensively in San Diego, fine-tuning their skills ahead of this significant opening game.

The roster of AC Boise reflects the global nature of soccer, with players hailing from diverse backgrounds. Coach Miller highlighted this multicultural aspect: “Players are used to being in very multicultural international locker rooms. We have a very diverse team.” From athletes originating in Ukraine, South Africa, and Kenya, to American players from various states, the breadth of experiences promises to enrich the team culture.

Among the players, only one—midfielder Blake Bodily—is from Idaho, having grown up in Eagle. Bodily has previously played for the Portland Timbers and has experience with United Soccer League teams in San Diego and Tampa Bay. His local roots are complemented by the enthusiasm of his teammates, including Philip Mayaka from Nairobi, who expressed his happiness about joining the Idaho community. “I feel like it's a good state,” Mayaka said, adding, “I'm happy to be around friendly people.”

Many players have also expressed excitement about exploring Boise's scenic surroundings. “From the training field, you can see the mountains,” Mayaka noted, reflecting on their new environment and the vibe it brings to their training sessions.

The first home game for AC Boise is eagerly anticipated on Saturday, April 4, against the Spokane Velocity FC, and will take place at the newly renovated Park at Expo Idaho. The venue’s enhancements are expected to create an exhilarating atmosphere for both players and fans, marking a new era for soccer in the region.
