This week, the Wolfe County Search and Rescue team successfully guided a lost hiker to safety using innovative technology. Kevin Osbourn, the public information officer for the team, reported that they have been averaging about two rescues each week since the weather improved. The most recent incident involved a hiker who strayed off the designated path near Osborne Bend in the Gorge and found herself stuck on a steep ridge.

“Once we have their number and they have a cell signal, normally we can call them, talk to them, tell them we can see them on a map and we know where they are, go to the right, go to the left,”

Osbourn explained. This effective use of technology allows rescue teams to transform hours of arduous foot searches into mere minutes of digital navigation. The ability to send a location link directly to a hiker's smartphone greatly minimizes risks for both rescuers and those in need.

While modern technology has proven invaluable in rescue operations, Osbourn emphasizes that essential safety measures are irreplaceable. Hikers are urged to carry physical maps or use navigation apps, inform someone about their route and expected return time, stick to marked trails, and pack necessary gear for their journeys.

“Make sure your phone is charged. If your phone is charged and you have a signal and get in trouble like the hiker yesterday, that is your ticket out,”

Osbourn stated, highlighting the critical role that a smartphone can play in emergency situations. In cases where cellular signals fail, newer devices, such as the iPhone 14 and higher models, come equipped with SOS emergency satellite features to help connect users with rescuers.

This evolution in technology makes a hiker’s smartphone one of the most vital pieces of gear in the wilderness. Osbourn referred to it as “insurance,” underscoring its capacity to ensure safety in unpredictable circumstances. Yet, technology alone cannot substitute for basic hiking knowledge and preparedness.
