From Bankrupt Chaos to World Traveler: How I Turned $500 into a Life-Changing Adventure!

Lauren Burnison's life took a dramatic turn in 2016 when she made the life-changing decision to quit drinking. Now, this 41-year-old mother from Perthshire, Scotland, is the founder of We Love Lucid, the UK's first alcohol-free travel company. As the holiday season wraps up, many reflect on their indulgences, but Burnison's story stands out as a beacon of transformation and resilience.
Growing up in Belfast amidst the Troubles, Burnison experienced a childhood shadowed by a "blanket of fear." Her journey led her from her hometown to various cities, including Edinburgh and Buenos Aires, where she found herself engulfed in a lifestyle characterized by "chaos." On New Year's Eve in 2002, her life reached a peak of turmoil during a violent altercation in Argentina, fueled by alcohol and reckless behavior.
Fast forward to today, and Burnison's life is markedly different. After quitting alcohol, she embarked on a journey around the globe that allowed her to experience life with newfound clarity. "I’d done a lot of travelling in the past, but this time it was different. This time, I was seeing life through the clear lens of lucidity," she recounted. During her travels, she discovered a charming Andalusian town called Ronda, which inspired her to create unique alcohol-free travel experiences.
Since its inception, We Love Lucid has catered to sober solo travelers seeking adventure without the influence of alcohol. Burnison explained, "Our trips are geared towards sober solo travellers who are looking for a new challenge and who want to connect with others like them." The company focuses on fostering connections and crafting unforgettable experiences that do not revolve around drinking.
Burnison's commitment to sobriety has not only transformed her professional life but also deeply impacted her personal life, particularly her family vacations. Recently, she embarked on a two-month road trip through Spain and Portugal with her four-year-old daughter. "The motivation for the trip was partly to escape the dark Scottish winter, but it's also an opportunity to expand our horizons and do something that challenges us," she shared. The trip emphasizes outdoor activities, which Burnison finds beneficial for mental health. "We prepare our meals outside and eat under the stars," she explained. "My daughter spends her days playing with other children and animals while I get on with the basic chores of cooking and washing."
This adventure also included explorations of historic sites, such as the remains of an ancient Roman city in Extremadura, Spain. "The best days are the ones we haven't planned," she remarked, highlighting their spontaneous excursions like an impromptu trip to the beach. Looking forward, Burnison is excited about upcoming events, including the Big Wave surfing competition in Nazaré, where surfers tackle waves up to 100 feet high.
Burnison noted that had she still been drinking, such enriching experiences would have been "almost impossible" due to the toll that alcohol takes on one's well-being and finances. Without the burden of hangovers, she finds herself with both time and money to explore the world more freely. "There's so much to do. We meet a lot of different people on the trip, and many ask why I don't drink, so the topic comes up quite a lot," she said. This openness has prompted meaningful conversations and budding friendships, further enriching her sober journey.
As she approaches a milestone of ten years of sobriety, Burnison acknowledges its paramount importance in her life. "My sobriety is my biggest priority in life. Without it, I wouldn't be doing any of this," she affirmed. Looking ahead, We Love Lucid is poised for expansion in 2026, with plans potentially including a group climb up Mount Toubkal in Morocco and a women's-only journey along the Portuguese section of the Camino de Santiago to raise funds for the She Recovers Foundation.
