Foxboro's Shocking Decision: Why the World Cup License Could Change Everything for Locals!

The excitement around the 2026 FIFA World Cup is palpable, especially in Foxboro, Massachusetts, where a significant milestone has just been reached. The Foxboro Select Board has officially signed off on an event license that paves the way for the tournament to take place at Gillette Stadium, which will be temporarily rebranded as “Boston Stadium” for the event.
During a recent Select Board meeting, Police Chief Michael Grace expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “These matches will bring an excitement that this town has never seen.” This positive outlook comes after a period of tension, where Chief Grace criticized the Boston Soccer 2026 nonprofit host committee for what he described as a “failed strategy” in addressing the town’s public safety needs ahead of the World Cup.
However, those concerns seem to have been addressed as Boston Soccer 2026, in collaboration with Kraft Sports & Entertainment—operators of Gillette Stadium—has agreed to cover Foxboro’s substantial request of $7.8 million to fund necessary security personnel and equipment. This agreement signifies not only a commitment to safety but also a strong partnership between local authorities and the World Cup organizers.
From June 13 to July 9, Gillette Stadium will host seven matches, including five in the group stage and two knockout games. Given that the World Cup is categorized as a SEAR 1 event, which denotes the highest risk level for public gatherings in the United States, the need for extensive security planning is paramount. Chief Grace assured that “the security planning that’s been ongoing for this event has never stopped,” adding that preparations have been in progress for over a year and a half.
In addition, Gary Ronan, an attorney representing Boston Soccer 2026, informed the Select Board that the host committee has already deposited approximately $1.5 million into an escrow account held by the town. The committee has also committed to promptly covering any public safety staffing invoices within one business day of receipt during the tournament. Ronan expressed gratitude to the stakeholders involved, emphasizing their efforts to ensure a secure environment for Foxboro residents and visitors alike. “You all have worked very hard and done what you need to do to protect the inhabitants, the citizens and residents of Foxboro,” he remarked.
The Kraft Group has further assured that it will cover any potential funding gaps, reinforcing its financial commitment for the “full extent of deployment the public safety officials have determined is needed to execute a safe and secure event,” which is expected to exceed an additional $5 million on top of the $1.5 million already allocated.
Select Board Chairman Bill Yukna celebrated the agreement, stating, “We, as a community, have done our job. We’ve protected the taxpayers.” This sentiment underscores the community's dedication to ensuring that the World Cup not only brings excitement but also prioritizes the safety and well-being of its residents.
As anticipation builds for this prestigious sporting event, the collaboration between local authorities and the organizers of the World Cup demonstrates a commitment to not just hosting a significant global event, but doing so responsibly and effectively. With the groundwork now laid, Foxboro stands ready to welcome soccer fans from around the world and offer them an unforgettable experience in the heart of Massachusetts.
