This decision comes just five months after he was hospitalized due to a heart issue, as confirmed by his current club, Sao Paulo, on Saturday.

The club revealed that Oscar finalized the termination of his contract earlier this week. Initially, the contract was set to run until the end of 2027. Oscar's health complications arose in November 2023, when he experienced a medical episode known as vasovagal syncope — a condition leading to fainting due to a sudden decrease in heart rate or blood pressure. During preseason testing, Oscar collapsed and was reportedly unconscious for approximately two minutes. At the time, Sao Paulo stated that he had “presented a complication with cardiac changes.” Following this incident, he underwent surgery to address his health concerns.

Oscar returned to Sao Paulo, his boyhood club, in late 2024 on a free transfer after a successful stint in China, where he played for Shanghai SIPG. His move to Shanghai during the 2016-17 season involved a hefty transfer fee of around $73 million. “I wanted to do more for São Paulo, I wanted to play more,”

Oscar expressed in a club statement.

“I think I had both the footballing ability and the age to play more, but unfortunately this happened. Now I’m going to retire and continue supporting São Paulo, continue my life as a fan.”
