Florida’s Lt. Gov. Jay Collins Enters 2026 Race: Is This the End for Trump’s Favorite?

Florida Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins has officially announced his candidacy for the 2026 gubernatorial race, aiming to succeed the term-limited Governor Ron DeSantis. Collins' entry into the Republican primary positions him against current U.S. Representative Byron Donalds, who has garnered the endorsement of former President Donald Trump.
Collins was appointed as lieutenant governor by DeSantis in August 2022, but as of now, DeSantis has not endorsed any candidate for the upcoming election. In his announcement, Collins stated, “I’m running for Governor because leadership is forged under pressure, not in soundbites.” He emphasized his background in the military, highlighting over 23 years of service, primarily as a Green Beret. “Accountability is real, decisions have consequences, and service comes before self. That experience shaped how I lead and why I believe public office is a public trust,” he added.
Born in Montana, Collins has shared his story of resilience, having faced personal challenges, including homelessness during his high school years. His military career is notable not only for his service but also for his perseverance after suffering a significant injury that resulted in the loss of a leg. Remarkably, he continued to serve for an additional five years as a Green Beret, utilizing a prosthetic leg after his amputation. This narrative of determination and service resonates strongly with many voters, especially within the military and veteran communities.
In addition to his military background, Collins has made significant contributions to disaster relief efforts as the chief operating officer of Operation BBQ Relief. This organization mobilizes chefs and mobile kitchens to provide meals in the aftermath of natural disasters. His recent involvement in humanitarian efforts includes a trip to Israel in June, where he assisted in state-funded evacuations of Americans during escalating conflict between Israel and Iran.
In Florida, the role of lieutenant governor has been largely ceremonial, with the primary official responsibility being to step in if the governor is unable to serve. Collins was elected to the state Senate in 2022, where he has emerged as a key ally to DeSantis in the predominantly Republican legislature.
During a press conference, DeSantis praised Collins, referring to him as a “good guy,” but remained non-committal regarding an endorsement in the primary race. “If I get involved in the primary, you’ll know it,” DeSantis remarked, leaving the door open for potential support.
Since being elected governor in 2018 and reelected in 2022, DeSantis has become a prominent figure in national politics, particularly regarding his policies and stances on various issues. Under current Florida law, a governor can only serve two consecutive four-year terms, thus creating an open race for the next election cycle.
Collins' primary competitors include Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett, James Fishback, CEO of Azoria, former Florida House Speaker Paul Renner, and activist Bobby Williams. The Democratic field features Orlando Mayor Jerry Demings and former Republican U.S. Representative David Jolly.
As the political landscape continues to evolve in Florida, Collins' military background, personal story, and commitment to public service may resonate with voters looking for a candidate who embodies resilience and leadership. With a diverse field of candidates emerging, the Republican primary promises to be competitive as the state gears up for the 2026 gubernatorial election.
