Eryk Anders' Shocking UFC Exit: You Won't Believe What He's Launching Next!

VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. (WBRC) - Eryk Anders is embarking on a new chapter after retiring from the UFC on his own terms. The former Alabama football national champion has transitioned to full-time coaching as the owner of Ya Boi Fitness Academy in Vestavia Hills. The gym's playful name comes from a nickname given to him by a friend that has stuck through the years.
Anders emphasizes that his gym is not a traditional fighting gym; instead, it focuses on building confidence and life skills that can have a lasting impact. “I’m not really too interested in fighters. I’m really more interested in the common person, discipline, and teaching them a skill they can take forever,” Anders explained.
From the Field to the Mat: Lessons Learned
With a background rich in both football and mixed martial arts, Anders has accumulated a wealth of knowledge that he aims to pass on to his students. “Discipline, work ethic, and things like that all the great coaches that I’ve played and coached under have instilled in me,” he said. These foundational lessons are pivotal as he pivots from athlete to mentor.
Anders began his UFC journey in 2017, culminating in a retirement announcement in March after securing his 20th career fight win. Throughout his time in the UFC, he achieved notable success, winning 10 fights. Reflecting on his career, Anders remarked, “I think that’s the coolest part of the story. I got to choose, not father time, or the UFC, or somebody else choosing when I’m done fighting.”
Looking ahead, his mission is focused on more than just wins and losses. He aims to foster a supportive environment within his gym, prioritizing personal development over competitive accolades. This ethos resonates deeply with the community and mirrors the teachings he received throughout his athletic career.
Anders feels a strong connection to the Vestavia Hills community, which continues to recognize his achievements years after his time playing football for Alabama. “I haven’t played football for Alabama in 16-17 years, and still, walking through Walmart, people from down the street are like, hey, you’re the guy from the National Championship Game or the guy who fights in the UFC,” he shared. This ongoing recognition speaks to the impact he has had in the area.
Central to Anders’ message is the idea that failure isn’t fatal. He encourages his students to embrace setbacks as part of the learning process, stressing the importance of resilience: “No matter what happens to you in sport or in life, get back up and keep it moving.”
As Anders continues to build Ya Boi Fitness Academy and foster a community of growth, he remains committed to teaching not just physical skills, but also life lessons that can empower individuals for years to come.
