De Pere Superintendent's SHOCKING Resignation: What Health Crisis Forced This Decision?

In a significant development for the Unified School District of De Pere, Superintendent Christopher Thompson announced he will be stepping down from his position at the end of the current school year. This announcement was made during the Board of Education meeting held on Monday, April 21, 2026.

Thompson, who took the helm as superintendent in 2022, cited ongoing health concerns as the primary reason for his departure. In a heartfelt message to families and staff, he disclosed that he is suffering from a chronic health condition known as polycythemia vera (PV), which is caused by an acquired genetic mutation. In his statement, he explained,

Hello USDD Families:

I am writing to you today so you hear this message directly from me. Last month I shared with our staff that I have a chronic health condition called polycythemia vera (PV) that is caused by an acquired genetic mutation.

Yesterday evening (Monday, April 21), I discussed my ongoing health concerns and challenges with the USDD Board of Education. At the meeting, I informed them that my PV has progressed, and my time serving our school district will soon come to an end.

I am stepping down as the Superintendent of the Unified School District of De Pere at the end of the 2025-26 school year.

Thompson expressed his gratitude towards the staff and families, stating,

Please know that it has been a true honor to support and lead the District in teaching our community's students. I believe education is a noble calling, one where we are lucky enough to be entrusted to guide children in their growth journey toward becoming the leaders of tomorrow. In that, I am blessed to have stood at the side of our staff during mutual professional endeavors. I thank them, and you, our families, for considering me a teammate in our most important work.

Thompson’s tenure as superintendent has been pivotal for De Pere, a city located in Brown County, Wisconsin, known for its strong educational values and community involvement. His leadership has seen various initiatives aimed at improving educational outcomes and fostering a supportive environment for students and staff alike.

The Board of Education is now tasked with discussing plans to fill the superintendent position following Thompson's departure. This transitional period could pose challenges for the district, especially as it looks to maintain the momentum Thompson has built over the past four years. The choice of his successor could significantly influence the district's direction in addressing ongoing educational needs and community aspirations.

As the district prepares for this leadership change, stakeholders will be keenly watching how the Board navigates the selection process. It’s crucial that whoever steps into the role will not only continue the existing programs but also bring fresh ideas to enhance the educational landscape in De Pere.

The community’s response to Thompson's announcement is expected to be mixed, with many appreciating his transparency regarding his health while others are concerned about the future leadership of the district. In a world where educational leadership can significantly impact student outcomes, the transition ahead will be a critical focal point for parents, educators, and students alike as they look to uphold the district's commitment to excellence in education.
