Cal Poly's Shocking 10-Game Win Streak Ends—What Went Wrong in This Heart-Stopping Match?

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (KEYT) - After a formidable surge that saw Cal Poly's baseball team rack up a remarkable 10-game winning streak, the Mustangs faced a setback on Monday, suffering an 8-2 defeat to UC Davis at Baggett Stadium. This loss not only halted their momentum but also marked a significant turning point in their season.
Under the leadership of Coach Larry Lee, the Mustangs showcased an impressive run, including two three-game sweeps in the Big West Conference and an undefeated 8-0 start. With a .352 team batting average, they scored 85 runs and recorded 129 hits, of which 51 were extra-base hits. However, the loss dropped Cal Poly's record to 14-8 for the season and 8-1 in conference play, still positioning them ahead of UC San Diego (5-1) and a cluster of teams, including UC Davis, which are tied for third place at 5-4.
While the Mustangs had demonstrated resilience throughout the season—coming from behind in nine of their wins—Monday was a different story. The offense struggled, managing only two runs and five hits against a strong performance from UC Davis, which shattered a 2-2 tie with consecutive three-run rallies in the seventh and eighth innings.
Remarkably, this victory was a historic one for UC Davis, which entered the game with a dismal 3-29 record against Cal Poly at Baggett Stadium. The Aggies hadn't clinched a win in San Luis Obispo since 2018, ending an eight-game losing streak against the Mustangs. UC Davis head coach Tommy Nicholson celebrated his first victory over Cal Poly in nine attempts at this venue, bringing his overall record against the Mustangs to 3-12.
The Aggies demonstrated an aggressive offensive strategy, amassing 13 hits and utilizing five pitchers to limit Cal Poly to just five hits. Peter Storjohann (2-0) stood out among the pitchers, striking out two batters and securing the win during UC Davis's explosive seventh inning, which included a safety squeeze bunt by Zach Story and a two-run triple from Tyler Howard.
UC Davis extended their lead in the eighth inning, adding another three runs marked by another safety squeeze from Story and a two-run double by Korey Williams. On the other side of the diamond, Mustang starter Carson Turnquist showcased solid pitching, not allowing a hit in 4 2/3 scoreless innings before conceding runs in the fifth and sixth frames. Left-handed pitcher Josh Morano (3-1) ultimately took the loss, allowing the tiebreaking run in the seventh.
Cal Poly managed to take an early lead with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly from Ryan Tayman in the first inning. After UC Davis tied the game with runs in the fifth and sixth innings, the Mustangs evened the score again in the bottom of the sixth, courtesy of a sacrifice fly by Dante Vachini.
Throughout the series, several players shone brightly. Second baseman Alejandro Garza was particularly impressive, going 8-for-12 at the plate with four RBIs, while Casey Murray Jr. extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a single during the sixth inning. Cam Hoiland also kept his streak alive, doubling for his 10th consecutive game.
As for UC Davis, center fielder and Santa Barbara High School alum Kai Mault led the charge with a single, double, and triple. Tyler Howard contributed significantly with two RBIs from a double and a triple, while both Story and Williams added two hits and two RBIs each.
The Mustangs have now concluded a seven-game home stand and are set to hit the road for their next five contests. They will visit Loyola Marymount on Wednesday night before facing UC Riverside in a three-game Big West series from Friday through Sunday.
Despite the loss, Cal Poly remains a strong contender in the Big West, and fans will be eager to see how the Mustangs respond as they transition to their challenging road schedule ahead.
