During a recent showcase held outside the Legislative Office Building in Albany, the company unveiled a range of innovative devices designed for critical use during both natural and man-made disasters.

This initiative is rooted in the communication challenges experienced by first responders during the tragic events of the September 11 attacks, which led to the establishment of the FirstNet Authority. This dedicated wireless network, operated by AT&T, is specifically designed to meet the needs of first responders, ensuring they have reliable communication channels in emergencies.

Among the cutting-edge technologies demonstrated at the showcase was a robotic dog, engineered to secure facility perimeters and protect aircraft ground operations. This ingenious solution symbolizes a new frontier in public safety, merging technology with essential security functions.

John Emra, the Northeast Region President of AT&T, explained the utility of drones, stating, “They get to a scene, they can launch a drone. The drone will actually follow the officer if they choose to do that, or otherwise they can sit up there and loft on station. It'll stay in the air for 30 minutes. It provides real-time video as well as thermal imaging to give them a sense of what's going on in the scene.”

The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) and the New York Police Department (NYPD) are among AT&T's largest clients nationwide, employing these advanced technologies to boost their operational efficiency and safety. Jordan Shultz, a therapy dog handler with FirstNet, observed, "There's a lot of people that will want to go to therapy and want to talk to someone, but there's also just about the same amount of people that would rather talk to a dog."
