The U.S. Air Force is taking significant steps to modernize its Physical Fitness Readiness Program (PFRP), as announced in a recent Directive Type Memorandum. This update introduces new standards and scoring models aimed at better preparing Airmen for the evolving demands of modern warfare while promoting their long-term health and fitness. The initiative aligns with the Air Force's commitment to ensuring that its personnel are not only physically fit for today's challenges but also for a sustainable career in service.

According to Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Ken Wilsbach, the updated standards emphasize the creation of durable fitness habits among Airmen. "Our new standards are designed to help Airmen build fitness habits that will serve them throughout their careers and hopefully a long life," Wilsbach stated. This initiative is a proactive approach to foster readiness, recognizing that physical fitness is integral to effective performance in the field.

The modernization of the PFRP is underpinned by scientifically grounded health measures and a more rigorous assessment model. Key updates include increased minimum scores for each component of the fitness test, as well as the introduction of separate charts for Occupationally Specific Physical Fitness Assessments. These changes are intentionally designed to focus on long-term health and overall warfighter effectiveness. The Air Force aims to ensure that its members are not only ready for immediate challenges but also capable of maintaining their fitness over the span of their careers.

To facilitate a smooth transition into these updated standards, the Air Force has established a baseline window for Airmen to take diagnostic tests starting March 1, 2026. This three-month period allows service members to familiarize themselves with the new requirements and adjust their training accordingly. Scoring for the new standards will officially begin on July 1, 2026. Additionally, Airmen who complete their diagnostic tests during this baseline window can choose to have their scores officially recorded, which is particularly beneficial for those stationed in colder climates where outdoor testing may be challenging.

Another significant change in the PFRP is the return of body composition as a scored component in the Physical Fitness Readiness Assessment (PFRA). Airmen will have the option to complete the body composition test up to five duty days before assessing the other fitness components. This flexibility aims to help Airmen manage their training schedules more effectively.

The Air Force is also urging Airmen and their commanders to leverage the diagnostic testing opportunities during this baseline period. The data gathered will play a crucial role in refining the updated score charts, ensuring they are fair and effective across the entire force. To support Airmen during this transition, several resources will be made available, including:

  • Master Fitness Leaders: These trained professionals will assist at installations, guiding Airmen through safe and effective conditioning programs.
  • The Warfighter Fitness Playbook: This comprehensive guide will offer insights on workouts, recovery strategies, sleep optimization, and nutrition, all vital for sustained performance.
  • The Pregnancy & Postpartum Performance Training Guide: Tailored to support pregnant and postpartum Airmen, this guide will provide specialized training and wellness recommendations.

As part of the ongoing improvements, the certification of the 2-mile run tracks is being undertaken to ensure all Air Force tracks meet official standards. Final guidance on measurement specifications will be released in AFMAN 36-2905.

Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force David R. Wolfe emphasized the importance of these updated standards, stating, "Airmen are the heart of the Air Force, and their readiness is essential to mission success.
