AI Use Soars While Tech Confidence Crashes—Are You Ready for the Job Market Shock?

New data released by ManpowerGroup reveals a stark reality: as artificial intelligence (AI) adoption accelerates, workers are facing a growing confidence gap and significant training void.

MILWAUKEE, Jan. 20, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- The latest findings from ManpowerGroup's 2026 Global Talent Barometer highlight a critical juncture for workers worldwide. While the percentage of employees regularly using AI has surged by 13% to reach 45%, their confidence in utilizing this technology has plummeted by 18%. This unsettling trend marks the first time in three years that overall worker confidence has declined, leading to a Global Talent Barometer score of just 67%.

The data indicates that individuals feel capable in their current roles but are increasingly apprehensive about the future. Approximately 89% of workers express confidence in their skills for their present jobs. However, a substantial 43% harbor fears that automation could replace their positions in the next two years, up from 38% in 2025. This anxiety has led to a phenomenon termed "job hugging," with 64% of workers planning to remain with their current employers as they seek stability amidst rapid technological change.

“The advance of AI means every leader is managing two horizons at once—the Now and the Next," said Becky Frankiewicz, President and Chief Strategy Officer at ManpowerGroup. “People are waiting for us to build the bridge between what they can do now and what they'll need to do next. But we can't ask them to transform while neglecting their well-being."

Key findings from the 2026 Global Talent Barometer reveal several alarming trends:

  • The AI Confidence Gap: Despite the rapid integration of AI, confidence in technological proficiency has significantly declined, especially among older generations. Baby Boomers reported a staggering 35% drop in tech confidence, while Gen X experienced a 25% decline. This erosion of confidence is a primary factor behind the overall decrease in sentiment.
  • The Training Void: A troubling 56% of the global workforce indicated they received no recent training, and 57% lack access to mentorship opportunities. This persistent lack of development support raises critical concerns about skills readiness as AI continues to penetrate workplaces.
  • Well-Being Remains a Critical Focus: Burnout is a significant issue, with nearly two-thirds (63%) of employees reporting symptoms. Stress (28%) and heavy workloads (24%) are the primary contributors. Although the Well-Being Index remained stable at 67% in 2026, it continues to pose a significant challenge for workers navigating ongoing changes. Job satisfaction stands at 62%.
  • Financial Pressure and Gen Z: The trend of "job hugging" appears driven more by necessity than loyalty. Half of all workers (50%) reported supplementing their primary income, a figure that rises to 68% among Gen Z workers.
  • Regional Divide: Workers' sentiments vary significantly by region, with India leading globally in both overall sentiment (77%) and AI adoption (77%). Conversely, Japan reported the lowest overall score at 48%.

The 2026 data from ManpowerGroup suggests that the initial excitement surrounding AI adoption is waning. As AI becomes a standard tool within organizations, employers that prioritize investment in their workforce—complementing technological advancements with effective communication, targeted training, mentorship, and well-being support—will be best positioned to enhance productivity while retaining valuable talent.
