In an age where sustainability and transparency in food sourcing are increasingly critical, a new digital technology from KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) is set to transform how seafood is tracked from ocean to table. On December 19, 2023, KAIST announced that OLIOPASS successfully passed the rigorous performance verification required by GDST, joining just 12 other technologies worldwide that have received this prestigious certification. Notably, only 7 of these entities, including KAIST, provide "Full Chain" traceability, which covers everything from production and processing to distribution and sales.

Founded in 2015 at the behest of the World Economic Forum, the GDST creates global standards to facilitate the digital recording and sharing of seafood movement information. By establishing a "common language for the supply chain," GDST aims to enhance the reliability of seafood history information, defining key data elements and critical tracking events that must be recorded as seafood moves through its lifecycle.

With recent shifts in food distribution, particularly in the United States and Europe, compliance with GDST standards is becoming increasingly essential for companies aiming to enter the global market. This need for compliance is underscored by new regulations from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which plans to enforce mandatory food traceability standards starting in July 2028. As domestic companies prepare for these regulatory changes, OLIOPASS stands out as a robust solution to help them align with global standards.

OLIOPASS leverages KAIST's advanced IoT technology in combination with international standards such as GS1 EPCIS 2.0 and GS1 Digital Link. The platform not only records and shares movement information in a standardized format but also employs blockchain technology to prevent data forgery or alteration. This capability ensures that, even when different companies utilize varying systems, historical data remains seamlessly linked, fostering a reliable and transparent seafood supply chain.
