Duke Rodriguez, a seasoned entrepreneur and former cabinet secretary in New Mexico, has officially thrown his hat into the ring, announcing his candidacy for governor in the upcoming 2026 election. Running as a Republican, Rodriguez aims to position himself as a candidate focused on experienced leadership and “practical solutions,” emphasizing the need for better management within the state.

In a press release, Rodriguez remarked, “New Mexico is not a poor state. It’s a poorly run state, and we can do better. New Mexico doesn’t need more slogans. It needs leadership that knows how systems actually work.” His assertion reflects a growing sentiment among some constituents who believe that effective governance is crucial for the state's potential.

Rodriguez’s background is notable; he previously served as the Chief Operating Officer of Lovelace Health System and was Secretary of the Human Services Department under former Governor Gary Johnson. More recently, he has gained recognition for building Ultra Health into New Mexico's largest medical cannabis company, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit in a rapidly evolving industry.

As he launches his campaign, Rodriguez outlines his platform, which includes strengthening healthcare access, improving educational outcomes, addressing public safety and homelessness, and tackling fiscal challenges such as underfunded pension systems. “This race shouldn’t be about labels or symbolism,” Rodriguez stated. “It should be about who has actually run large systems, fixed real problems and delivered results.” His approach underscores a pragmatic vision for the state's future.

DGA spokesperson Izzi Levy stated, “With Duke Rodriguez’s entrance into the Republican primary for governor, he joins a field of candidates who will have to own Donald Trump’s destructive and deeply unpopular agenda that jacks up costs for working families, puts healthcare in jeopardy for 90,000 New Mexicans, and threatens rural hospitals, all to give tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy.” This response signals the contentious political landscape ahead as candidates prepare to face off in a state that has been a battleground for varying ideologies.

Rodriguez joins a competitive field of candidates, including fellow Republicans state Sen. Steve Lanier of Aztec and Rio Rancho Mayor Gregg Hull. On the Democratic side, the race is shaping up with names such as Sam Bregman, the 2nd Judicial District attorney; Deb Haaland, former U.S. Interior Secretary; and Ken Miyagashima, former Las Cruces mayor.
