Why Did Apollo Just Invest in Wrexham? Shocking Reasons Will Leave You Speechless!

Apollo Sports Capital, an investment platform under the umbrella of Apollo Global Management Inc., has announced its plan to purchase a minority stake in the Wrexham Association Football Club for an undisclosed sum. The announcement was made on Monday, further elevating the club's profile and financial backing as it aims for growth in the competitive world of English football.

The investment aligns with Wrexham’s long-term strategy to ascend to the English Premier League. The club is currently under the stewardship of majority stakeholders, actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, who acquired 85% of the shares in 2020. McElhenney and Reynolds, who have increased the club's visibility through the hit television series “Welcome to Wrexham,” will continue to manage the club as controlling owners.

Wrexham has experienced remarkable success on the pitch, moving from the fifth tier of English football to compete in the English Football League Championship, the second tier, after achieving successive promotions in 2023, 2024, and 2025. This trajectory has not only garnered attention but also attracted significant sponsorship revenue, benefiting the club financially.

As part of this latest investment, Apollo will also support vital redevelopment projects, including improvements to the team’s stadium and the Wrexham Gateway project, which seeks to enhance transportation and facilities near the club's home ground in North Wales.

In a joint statement, McElhenney and Reynolds emphasized their commitment to building a sustainable future for Wrexham AFC. “From day one, we wanted to build a sustainable future for Wrexham Association Football Club. And to do it with a little heart and humor,” they said. “Growth like that takes world-class partners who share our vision and ambition, and Apollo absolutely does.”

Apollo launched its sports capital business in September, aiming to provide strategic financing within the sports and media ecosystem. Notably, the firm also announced a majority stake in Atlético Madrid in November. Lee Solomon, partner and co-portfolio manager of Apollo Sports Capital, expressed excitement about the partnership, stating, “Wrexham is on an incredible journey, and we are thrilled to be a part of it and to support the Club, the Wrexham community and Rob and Ryan.” He highlighted that Apollo's investment represents a commitment to contribute to the revitalization of both the club and the local economy.

This collaboration between Hollywood celebrity and financial investment reflects a broader trend in sports where non-traditional stakeholders are increasingly involved in club management. As Wrexham continues its ascent through the ranks of English football, the partnership with Apollo could prove pivotal not only for the club's ambitions but also for the revitalization of community engagement and local economic growth.
