ANCHORAGE, Alaska — As Alaska gears up for upcoming election cycles, the state is taking proactive steps to ensure the integrity of its voter rolls. The Alaska Division of Elections is launching an initiative by sending out a "voter registration confirmation notice" to residents, aiming to maintain accurate voter registration records.

According to Carol Beecher, the director of the Alaska Division of Elections, this annual maintenance process is mandated by both state law and the National Voter Registration Act. The primary goal is to confirm the residency status of voters and identify any inactive registrations that may be lingering on the rolls. "As part of the required list maintenance process that is required by statute and by the National Voter Registration Act," Beecher explained, "we need to ensure that our voter rolls reflect current and accurate information."

This initiative is crucial for several reasons. If voters do not respond to the confirmation notices, inactive voters will remain listed at their addresses. This could lead to an overflow of unwanted mail and complicate communication during election campaigns. Beecher noted the frustrations of candidates and legislators who encounter situations where they seek to connect with registered voters, only to find that the individual has not lived at the address for years. "What we hear back, from usually candidates and legislators, when they mail out things or when they go as they’re campaigning, they’ll go to somebody’s house and ask for John Smith at 123 First Street and want to talk to him,” she shared. “And the person will say, ‘Well, I don’t know who that is. That person hasn’t lived here for years.’”

In 2024, the Alaska Division of Elections sent out approximately 51,000 notices. Alarmingly, about 29,500 of these notices were not returned, indicating a significant gap in voter engagement. To mitigate this, residents receiving a card for someone who no longer resides at their address are encouraged to return it with "return to sender" written on it, facilitating the next steps in the verification process. “When you get these voter registration confirmation notices, if you are getting them at your place of residence, and it is addressed to someone who does not live there, to please return that back to the division,” Beecher urged.
