WASHINGTON — In a significant response to recent violence, all National Guard members currently deployed in Washington, D.C., are now armed. This decision follows the tragic shooting incident last week near the White House that resulted in the death of one Guardsman and left another hospitalized.

Pentagon Press Secretary Kingsley Wilson confirmed the order on Tuesday, emphasizing that the safety of service members is paramount. "I can confirm that everybody in DC is now armed, and a lot of our DC National Guardsmen are now also doing joint patrols with members of the police department here in DC," Wilson stated during a press briefing. The incident which precipitated this decision involved an ambush shooting of two National Guardsmen near the Farragut West metro station, not far from the White House. One of the Guardsmen, Sarah Beckstrom, 20, later succumbed to her injuries, while the other, Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains hospitalized.

The suspect in the shooting, identified as 29-year-old Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, has been charged with multiple offenses, including murder, assault, and firearms charges. Currently, more than 2,200 National Guard members from across the nation are part of what is known as Joint Task Force DC, with an additional 500 troops expected to arrive shortly. "I can tell you that our mission set is critical. We are keeping American cities safe all across this country, and we are going to remain committed to that," she affirmed.

When asked about potential deployments of National Guard members in other cities, Wilson stated there were no new announcements at this time. However, she reiterated the ongoing threats that many American cities face, highlighting that the National Guard is prepared to collaborate with local law enforcement to mitigate these risks. "These missions aren't going to stop in Chicago, in Los Angeles, in DC. We understand the urgent threat that is facing many of these cities, and the National Guard is proud to step in alongside our law enforcement partners to help with that," Wilson said.
