Life Time Fitness's Shocking White Plains Move: Is Your Neighborhood Next? Find Out NOW!

In a move that highlights the growing demand for fitness facilities in urban areas, Life Time Fitness is set to open a new health club in White Plains, New York. The forthcoming location will occupy approximately 60,000 square feet in The Source building at 1 Maple Ave., a space that was previously home to the furniture retailer Raymour & Flanigan, which has relocated to a store on Route 119.
This new health club will complement Life Time’s existing facility located on Westchester Avenue, addressing the need for additional health and wellness options in the city’s downtown area. The project has been approved under local zoning laws, requiring a special permit for operation.
The Source building is already home to a variety of well-known tenants, including Whole Foods, Cheesecake Factory, DICK’S Sporting Goods, and the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. With 1,025 parking spaces available in the building’s garage, attorney William Null of the White Plains-based law firm Cuddy & Feder assures that there will be ample parking for gym-goers. He also mentioned that the facility will incorporate sound isolation measures to mitigate noise concerns for neighboring tenants.
“They’re very sensitive to making sure there’s isolation for sound,” Null noted. “They’ve designed that into this program and we’ve included an acoustical report that highlights different ways in which sound can be mitigated.”
Ashley Astor, Life Time’s development manager, discussed the features of the new health club, which will include an open fitness floor, studio spaces for group exercises such as Pilates and Yoga, and locker rooms for both men and women. A co-ed wet suite will also be a feature, offering amenities like a hot tub, cold plunge, sauna, and steam room. A small café will provide healthy offerings, including protein shakes, coffee, breakfast items, and meals for children.
In a notable feature for families, the health club will include a Kid’s Academy that utilizes around 2,900 square feet of the facility. According to Astor, "Our Kid’s Academy is a program where we have, once you’re 90-days-old, three months all the way up to 11-years-old, you can bring your kids to the Kid’s Academy." This space will offer dedicated areas for toddlers and infants, providing 2.5 hours of childcare with membership.
In efforts to create an inviting atmosphere, Astor explained that plans are underway to add new windows to the Maple Avenue side of the building. “There are no windows currently in the space. It was a Raymour & Flanigan furniture store and they did not necessarily need windows. We don’t want to have a dark, dingy fitness space. We want to make it nice and beautiful,” she said. The design includes plans to punch eight windows that will align with the existing windows from Danone, which are located on the floor above.
This development signals a broader trend in urban planning where fitness and wellness spaces are increasingly integrated into mixed-use developments, catering to the health-conscious population in metropolitan areas. As cities like White Plains evolve, residents are looking for convenient access to quality fitness facilities, which foster both physical activity and community engagement.
As Life Time Fitness prepares for this new venture, the company is poised to not only enhance the local fitness landscape but also contribute to the lively atmosphere of The Source, making it a multifaceted destination for shopping, dining, and wellness.
