You Won’t Believe the Shocking Health Benefits of These New Snacks Funded by a Secret Grant!

In an inspiring move toward promoting healthier eating habits among schoolchildren, Hautes Capelles School has recently expanded its student-led nutrition initiative. This initiative, known as the ‘Focus on Our Diet Team’ or F.O.O.D, is designed to provide fresh produce to the school's 400 pupils and is the culmination of a two-year project aimed at enhancing nutrition within the student population.

The F.O.O.D team, comprised entirely of students, plays a pivotal role in this initiative by selecting available snacks and encouraging their peers to opt for healthier choices. With significant support from the charity GROW and the Health Improvement Commission, the school has introduced “hedge veg” boxes filled with fresh fruit and vegetables available to students during breaks and clubs.

This enhanced offering has been made possible through new funding from the M&S Guernsey Community Fund. This financial support allows the school to provide a broader array of items that students have specifically requested, including snacks like peppers, pineapple, and carrot sticks. According to Stephanie Williams, a teacher and the Eat Well Lead at Hautes Capelles School, “The money that M&S gifted to Hautes Capelles has been beneficial to hundreds of children.” Williams noted that each week, the school adds a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables sourced from M&S to their 'hedge veg' wooden boxes, creating excitement among students.

Williams describes the impact of this initiative as visible and significant. “The children get excited to try the fruit and veg and essentially ‘top up’ their snack or lunchbox. For some children, it’s a chance to try something new altogether,” she explained. This weekly tradition has fostered a sense of anticipation; students look forward to Wednesdays when they can rush to the hedge veg boxes to discover the fresh offerings. The initiative not only promotes healthier eating but also encourages students to explore a wider range of foods.
