Ohio State Football’s SHOCKING Setback: Can They Recover Before Final Spring Practice?

The spring season serves as a critical time for college football recruiting, and the Ohio State Buckeyes are no exception. As the team wraps up spring practices, they faced a setback in their efforts to secure a key defensive recruit over the weekend.

This week marks an important milestone for Ohio State, with the highly anticipated spring game scheduled for Saturday. As the final week of spring practices approaches, the Buckeyes are gearing up not just for the game but also for welcoming a host of key recruiting visitors. However, the weekend brought some disappointing news on the recruiting front.

Ohio State Loses Defensive Recruit to Oregon Ducks

West Linn, Oregon, four-star cornerback Josiah Molden announced his commitment to the Oregon Ducks on Sunday, choosing them over prominent programs including Ohio State, Texas, and Washington. While Ohio State was considered a strong contender, recruiting a star player from Oregon's backyard was always going to be a formidable challenge.

“Growing up in Oregon, I kind of wanted to explore outside of the state and see what else is out there,” Molden stated via Scoop Duck. “But I realized this is home for me here. It was good for me to experience other places.”

Ranked as the No. 228 player nationally and the No. 27 cornerback by 247 Sports Composite, Molden's decision is a significant win for Oregon, especially as they manage to keep the top-ranked player in the state from leaving. His impressive athleticism is complemented by a notable NFL family lineage; his brother, Elijah Molden, is a current NFL safety, while his father, Alex Molden, is a former NFL cornerback.

Ohio State had high hopes for the 6-foot, 175-pound Molden, but despite their best efforts, they were unable to change his mind. Currently, the Buckeyes have yet to secure any cornerbacks for their 2027 recruiting class out of the nine commitments they have received thus far. They hold the No. 3 ranked recruiting class according to 247 Sports, which includes three defensive commitments led by five-star cornerback DJ Jacobs. Last recruiting cycle, Ohio State successfully brought in cornerbacks Jay Timmons and Jordan Thomas, with Timmons already making a name for himself as a spring standout.

Although losing a recruit of Molden's caliber is a setback for Ohio State, it's essential to recognize the inherent challenges of recruiting in a region closely tied to a rival program. The Buckeyes' disappointment underlines the continuing battles that top-tier programs face as they vie for elite talent, particularly from within a state’s own borders.

As Ohio State continues to navigate the recruiting landscape, they will be looking for their first cornerback commitment as the focus shifts toward the spring game and the upcoming recruiting season. The quest to strengthen their defense remains a priority, as they aim to uphold their status as one of college football's elite programs.
