After 71 Days of Heartbreak, This Birmingham Woman's Dog Rescue Will Leave You in Tears!

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - A remarkable story of perseverance and community spirit unfolded in Birmingham, Alabama, where a woman named Jasmine Lawson dedicated three months to rescuing a stray dog she discovered near a Walmart parking lot. Her journey not only led to the rescue of the dog, named Wally, but also captivated the hearts of thousands who followed her efforts on social media.
It all began in early January when Lawson noticed Wally standing against a wall in the parking lot. Having seen him there before, she felt an instant connection and couldn’t shake the thought of leaving him behind. “I couldn’t get it out of my mind. I knew I had to get him,” she recounted.
For 71 days, Lawson returned to the parking lot multiple times each day, trying various methods to coax Wally into her care. This relentless pursuit was powered not just by her determination, but also by a wave of support from local rescues, community members, and even strangers who offered donations, tips, and resources to aid in the effort. “It was exhausting. There were days that I wanted to give up. There were days that I cried,” she said, reflecting on the mental toll the experience took on her.
Lawson documented each step of her journey on social media, sharing updates about close encounters and setbacks. This transparency helped her build a dedicated following who became emotionally invested in Wally's fate. After countless trials, Lawson finally succeeded in capturing Wally. “We got him in the cage and he has been nothing short of perfection ever since,” she said, expressing her joy over the successful rescue.
Once in her care, Wally visited the veterinarian, where he received a clean bill of health. However, a microchip revealed a previous owner who had adopted him from a rescue in 2022 but had relocated out of state and rehomed him in 2023. “He has been living at Walmart for at least one to two years,” Lawson explained. This detail provided insight into Wally's past and highlighted the often-overlooked issue of stray animals in urban areas.
Currently, Wally is living with Lawson while she contemplates whether to make him a permanent member of her family. In the meantime, she intends to keep his followers updated, stating, “It was kind of fun over those 71 days, like posting videos of him and so many people became so involved in this story. And really started to actually love him. And now he’s just a big superstar.”
To assist other strays in the community, Lawson expressed her desire to fundraise for a “Missy trap,” a tool specifically designed to help safely capture animals that avoid smaller traps. Her experience underscores the importance of community involvement and resourcefulness in addressing the issue of stray animals.
As Wally settles into his new life, Lawson’s journey serves as a poignant reminder of the impact one individual can have when they choose to act. Her story not only shines a light on the growing concern over stray animals in America but also highlights the power of social media in rallying support for a noble cause.
The rescue of Wally is a testament to what can be achieved when compassion meets determination, inspiring others to take action in their communities. With many people following Wally's story, it remains to be seen what the future holds for this charming dog and his devoted rescuer.
