You Won't Believe What Watson Just Revealed About His Shocking Run for Mississippi Lieutenant Governor!

Mississippi Secretary of State Michael Watson has officially announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor, a position that holds significant influence in the state's political landscape. In an announcement video released on Tuesday, Watson stated, “My life’s work has been serving Mississippi, from my time in the state Senate as a conservative fighter, to my time as secretary of state making sure our elections are secure and cutting the regulatory burden on Mississippi businesses so they can grow and prosper. I’m ready to be your lieutenant governor and my hope is you’ll join us on this campaign.”
Hailing from Pascagoula, Watson has served as the secretary of state since 2020. Before that, he was a member of the Mississippi Senate representing District 51 from 2008 to 2020. If elected lieutenant governor, he would preside over the Mississippi Senate, appointing committee chairs and members, as well as assigning bills to committees—granting him considerable power over legislative priorities.
In his announcement video, Watson reflected on his political journey and the influential figures who have guided him. He cited former U.S. Senator Thad Cochran for encouraging him to pursue state-level politics instead of seeking a role in Washington, D.C. He also thanked former Governor Phil Bryant, who held the lieutenant governor office before becoming governor in 2012, for encouraging his successful bid for secretary of state in 2019. The video features an endorsement from Bryant, who stated, “The reason Michael’s going to do a great job as lieutenant governor is he has that ability not only to work with people, to bring people together across party lines. He is a great listener. I’m also very proud to know that he’s stepping up in that leadership role. We need him there.”
Watson also highlighted a defining moment in his political career—the passage of a controversial abortion ban that contributed to the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in the landmark case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which ultimately overturned Roe v. Wade and eliminated federal abortion rights. He stated, “We passed a piece of legislation that ultimately went to the Supreme Court and overturned Roe v. Wade, and here we are, Mississippi at the tip of the spear, changing the law of the land when it comes to abortion, and we’re the ones that set the path forward for our country.”
The announcement comes as part of a larger political landscape in Mississippi, where the 2027 elections are shaping up to be competitive and consequential. Watson's formal campaign launch is set for an event in Jackson this evening at 5:30 p.m.
As Mississippi prepares for this critical election cycle, Watson's political experience and his ability to navigate complex issues may play a vital role in his campaign. His emphasis on strong leadership, bipartisan cooperation, and significant legislative achievements could resonate with voters looking for a candidate who prioritizes Mississippi's growth and stability.
