Governor Sherrill's Shocking Move: How New Early Voting Laws Could Change Your Vote Forever!

On a significant day for voting rights in New Jersey, Governor Mikie Sherrill officially signed into law a bill aimed at enhancing voter accessibility for regular municipal elections held in May. The legislation, identified as A4745/S420 and sponsored by Senators Brian Stack and Mukherji alongside Assemblyman Larry Wainstein, permits municipalities to extend the early voting period by four days, allowing voters to cast their ballots starting eight days before Election Day.
Governor Sherrill emphasized the importance of this legislation in the context of ongoing national discussions about voter access and election integrity. “As President Trump attempts to undermine elections and make voting harder through his unconstitutional Executive Order, we will take every step to protect the integrity of our elections and ensure they are more accessible for New Jerseyans,” she stated. “This bill will allow municipalities to expand early voting and ensure the people of our state have their voices heard at the local level, where these decisions will shape our neighborhoods, our schools, and our daily lives.”
This extension is particularly significant as it aligns the early voting period for nonpartisan municipal elections with the longer early voting window offered for state and federal elections, reflecting a growing movement toward making voting more accessible. Voters will now have a total of seven days to participate in early voting, which ends two days before Election Day.
Senator Stack shared his gratitude for the measure, saying, “I'd like to thank Governor Sherrill for signing this important legislation, as I strongly believe in enhancing voter accessibility. As many residents know, I often communicate about the importance of making it to the polls. This bill offers additional days to vote, and I’m hopeful that even more residents will participate in our sacred election process.”
Assemblyman Wainstein echoed this sentiment, asserting that early voting is not just a privilege but a necessity in today’s society. “Not everyone works a traditional 9 to 5, Monday through Friday work week. By increasing the number of days for early voting, we are allowing more people the opportunity to participate in our electoral process. I want to thank Governor Sherrill for signing this important bill into law. It is another shining example of how she always puts the best interests of the people first,” he stated.
This legislative action comes on the heels of controversy surrounding the Trump Administration's Executive Order focused on mail-in ballots. The order directed federal agencies to create lists of verified U.S. citizen voters and mandated that the U.S. Postal Service send mail-in ballots only to individuals on approved absentee lists. Critics argue that such measures could disenfranchise voters, particularly those from marginalized communities.
As the landscape of voting rights continues to evolve, this new law marks a proactive step by New Jersey lawmakers to enhance electoral participation among citizens. The move is indicative of larger trends across the nation, where accessibility to voting is increasingly being prioritized amidst ongoing debates about election security and integrity.
In a democracy, the ability to vote is foundational to civic engagement, shaping policies and leadership that directly impact citizens' daily lives. The extension of the early voting period for municipal elections not only facilitates greater voter turnout but also reinforces the state's commitment to ensuring that every voice is heard.
