You Won't Believe How Trump's Admin Ignored 5 Major Health Crises—Find Out What You Need to Know Now!

Washington, D.C. – In honor of National Public Health Week, Protect Our Care has raised alarms about what they describe as President Donald Trump’s most reckless actions that have endangered public health, particularly affecting children and communities of color. "Donald Trump’s contempt for science has had predictably harmful consequences," said Kayla Hancock, Director of Protect Our Care’s Public Health Project. She elaborated that the rise of preventable diseases like measles, paired with budget cuts to critical health research, has severely compromised American health.
The organization detailed five major actions taken by Trump that have led to significant public health setbacks:
1) Appointing Science-Denying Officials: Trump’s selection of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as Health Secretary exemplifies a troubling trend. Kennedy, known for his conspiracy-driven views on vaccines, has been encouraged by Trump to dismantle public health infrastructure and appoint anti-vaccine advocates to key positions within agencies such as HHS, the CDC, and the FDA. This has led to the purging of scientific experts and a lack of coherent strategies for managing public health crises. The detrimental effects are particularly pronounced among marginalized communities, where the neglect of vaccine programs has exacerbated health disparities.
2) Downgrading the CDC Child Vaccine Schedule: In January, Trump sanctioned a significant downgrade of the CDC’s childhood vaccine schedule, reducing the number of recommended vaccines from 17 to 11. This alarming policy change eliminated guidance for crucial vaccines such as those for influenza, Rotavirus, and Hepatitis A and B. The backlash was swift: 30 states, including Washington, D.C., declared their refusal to adhere to the CDC's recommendations for certain childhood vaccinations. Although a federal court intervened to stall this "reckless" and potentially "illegal" action in March, the proposed appeal could put countless children at risk for preventable diseases.
3) Promoting Cancer-Linked Chemicals: In a move that many see as a betrayal of public health, Trump signed an executive order in February to revive the production of glyphosate, a key ingredient in the herbicide Roundup, which has been linked to cancer. This action appears to favor Trump’s Republican chemical industry donors while disregarding the health risks faced by American families.
4) Cutting Science and Innovation Funding: A recent analysis from the New York Times highlights that in the first half of Trump’s second term, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) terminated 1,389 medical research grants and delayed funding for over 1,000 projects. Overall, the NIH disbursed approximately $1.6 billion less than the previous year during this period. In total, more than 2,000 NIH grants were either canceled or frozen in 2025, significantly hindering research across all scientific disciplines. Notably, the National Science Foundation also saw more than 400 active awards terminated. These cuts pose long-term risks to innovation and the pipeline of young scientists crucial for advancing U.S. scientific leadership.
5) Leadership Void at the CDC: Amid historic outbreaks of measles and other contagious diseases, Trump neglected to nominate a permanent CDC Director, allowing Jay Bhattacharya, the NIH Director, to juggle both roles ineffectively. This lack of stable leadership at the CDC undermines public confidence and hampers the agency's readiness for emerging public health threats.
As the U.S. grapples with these public health challenges, the implications of Trump’s actions resonate deeply across communities. The current climate of skepticism toward science and public health protocols fosters an environment where preventable diseases can thrive. The ongoing debates around vaccine efficacy and public health funding are not just political talking points; they have real-world consequences for millions of Americans, particularly the most vulnerable among us.
As Protect Our Care emphasized, the erosion of science-based health policies is a pressing concern that demands immediate attention and action from policymakers and the public alike. The fight for better health outcomes and the preservation of scientific integrity in public health remains critical for the well-being of all Americans.
