BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Pittsburg State University women's soccer team faced a tough exit in the opening round of the NCAA Division II National Tournament, falling 3-0 to St. Cloud State on Friday, November 21, at Chet Anderson Stadium. This matchup marked a significant moment for the Gorillas (14-4-2), who had a historic season filled with notable achievements, including clinching the MIAA regular season crown and securing their first appearances in both the MIAA Tournament and the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
St. Cloud State (15-2-5), on the other hand, advanced to the Central Region Quarterfinals, where they are set to compete against the winner of the Bemidji State vs. Central Missouri match on Sunday, November 23.
The match got off to a challenging start for the Gorillas, with Linsey Trapino scoring for the Huskies just five minutes into the game. Ellie Primerano added to the scoreline with goals in the 12th and 82nd minutes, ensuring a decisive victory for St. Cloud State. Despite their loss, Pittsburg State showed resilience, firing off a total of 13 shots during the match. However, only three of those shots necessitated a save from the Huskies' goalkeeper, Jaylee Strickland.
Leading the charge for the Gorillas was Danae Hobson, who managed to register three shots, each landing on target across both halves. In goal, Jocelyn Kramar made four crucial saves, showcasing her skills despite the team's defeat.
This loss, while disappointing, does not overshadow the progress made by the Pittsburg State women's soccer program this season. With a strong foundation built during this season, the Gorillas will undoubtedly aim to come back stronger next year.
