Vantaa's High-Tech Startup Challenge: Will Your Idea Be the Next Million-Dollar Breakthrough?

The Finnish city of Vantaa is taking significant steps to enhance its already robust high-tech ecosystem by inviting external companies to participate in its burgeoning semiconductor and advanced manufacturing sectors. Through a new initiative in collaboration with the venture capital firm Innovestor, Vantaa is now seeking innovative companies that specialize in semiconductors, precision measurement, advanced manufacturing, and energy to join its High Tech Cluster programme, which was introduced in 2025. Applications for this initiative, known as the VivaTech Vantaa High Tech Cluster Startup Challenge, are open until April 20, 2026.
Vantaa is no stranger to the semiconductor industry, accounting for over half of Finland’s semiconductor industry revenue. The city hosts notable companies like Vaisala and Okmetic, which operate in various domains such as sensing, measurement, and materials. This existing industrial base has created a vibrant cluster, bringing together players focused on environmental and industrial measurement, silicon wafer production, and related manufacturing processes. By inviting external companies into this active environment, Vantaa aims to build on its foundation and position itself as a strategic entry point into the larger Finnish market.
“We are looking for innovative solutions and partners across the value chain who could be interested in strategic collaboration with Vaisala,” said Kimmo Korpela, Vice President of M&A at Vaisala.
The initiative specifically seeks technologies that can be applied across various semiconductor processes, advanced manufacturing systems, energy infrastructures, and precision measurement. Startups and established companies alike are encouraged to apply, as long as they are developing hardware, software, or combined systems suitable for industrial settings. This open call reflects a keen interest in integrating innovative solutions into existing workflows to enhance production efficiency and measurement accuracy.
Innovestor’s Corporate Venturing team plays a crucial role in facilitating this process by identifying relevant companies and connecting them with local corporate partners involved in the Vantaa cluster. Their responsibilities include mapping startup solutions to specific industrial use cases and initiating collaboration discussions. This engagement not only enhances the innovation landscape in Vantaa but also serves as a gateway for selected companies to explore opportunities for piloting and longer-term partnerships with local industries.
Vantaa is also committed to providing soft-landing support for international companies looking to establish a presence in Finland. This support includes navigating regulatory and permitting requirements and connecting newcomers with the local startup and industrial ecosystems. The city's strategy aims to attract international players in high-tech manufacturing and related fields, particularly in sectors where robust infrastructure and local networks are essential for success.
“Vantaa offers international startups and scale-ups a unique soft-landing environment where innovation meets real industrial collaboration. Our city is committed to fostering open innovation programs with global technology leaders located in Vantaa,” stated Sergey Troshkov, Startup Soft Landing Manager at the City of Vantaa.
For companies selected through the VivaTech challenge, the benefits extend beyond local partnerships. Participants gain access to VivaTech in Paris and have the chance to pitch at a business networking event hosted at the Embassy of Finland on June 16. This exposure connects them directly with investors, corporate stakeholders, and other ecosystem partners. Moreover, participants receive valuable evaluation and feedback from Innovestor, offering insights from a seasoned Nordic venture capital firm with expertise in early-stage technology investments.
The challenge also serves to strengthen Vantaa’s role within the Nordic ecosystem, granting selected companies access to events like Slush, which includes participation in a High Tech Cluster side event with dedicated pitching slots. This initiative is part of a broader effort to solidify Vantaa’s position in critical technology sectors while fostering closer relationships among industrial companies, startups, and international partners.
With a clear focus on integrating external technologies into its vibrant industrial cluster, Vantaa is setting the stage for a collaborative future that promises to boost Finland's standing in the global high-tech arena. The VivaTech Vantaa High Tech Cluster Startup Challenge represents not just an opportunity for entrepreneurs and innovators, but also a significant move towards a more interconnected technological landscape that can lead to groundbreaking advancements in critical sectors.
