Explosive Evidence Unveiled: Is the Former AG Mayoral Candidate the Mastermind of Election Fraud?

A preliminary hearing in San Luis Obispo County Superior Court on Wednesday featured former mayoral candidate Gaea Powell, who is facing serious charges of election fraud. Powell, who ran for mayor of Arroyo Grande in both the 2022 and 2024 elections, was charged last June with a total of nine offenses: eight felonies and one misdemeanor. The charges include voter registration fraud, filing a false declaration of candidacy, fraudulent voting, failure to file campaign finance reports, and perjury by declaration.

Powell has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is representing herself in court, a decision that raises questions about her legal strategy in such a significant case. During the hearing, one of the witnesses called to testify was her landlord, Carolyn Moffatt. Moffatt has been renting a unit to Powell and her husband for several years; however, this property is located outside the city limits of Arroyo Grande on Heritage Lane.

Prosecutors presented evidence indicating that Powell registered to vote at an address on James Way, which is within the Arroyo Grande city limits, and used this same address when she ran for office. Moffatt testified that she believed Powell lived exclusively on her property and had raised concerns about her running for office, first with Powell's husband and then directly with Powell.

Powell contends that she was renting the James Way condo from Dr. Marquis David, who also testified during the hearing. Dr. David acknowledged giving Powell access to the condo but stated that no formal rental agreement was established. He added that, to his knowledge, she never paid rent or left any personal belongings at the condo, which would suggest that she resided there.

The cross-examination of witnesses was exhaustive, lasting for hours, as the prosecution laid out its case. The judge subsequently invited Powell to present her testimony, which is expected to continue in court on Thursday at 8:30 a.m..

Adding another layer of complexity to the situation, Powell is simultaneously running for the position of San Luis Obispo County Clerk-Recorder, facing off against incumbent Elaina Cano and candidate Vanessa Rozo in the upcoming June Primary Election. This dual campaign effort amidst serious legal troubles raises questions about her focus and ability to serve effectively in either role if elected.

This unfolding case not only highlights potential issues of integrity within local elections but also brings to light broader concerns regarding the ethical standards expected of public officials. As the hearing progresses, many in the community will be watching closely to see how these allegations unfold and what implications they might have for future elections in Arroyo Grande and beyond.
