Tragic Loss: How a Junior College Star's Dream Turned into a Heartbreaking Sports Obituary!

Craig Hilliard, a notable sports figure from Salisbury, North Carolina, passed away on March 22, 2026, at the age of 71. A graduate of Salisbury High School, Hilliard was not only a talented baseball player who was drafted by the Atlanta Braves but also excelled in basketball, showcasing his athletic versatility throughout his life.
Born on February 24, 1955, Hilliard turned 18 during his senior basketball season in 1972-73. Under the guidance of coach Bob Pharr, the Hornets implemented a disciplined 1-3-1 zone defense that frustrated opponents. Although the team only averaged 50 points per game, they allowed just 40, leading to an impressive 18-6 record and a 14-2 finish in the South Piedmont Conference (SPC). Notably, the Hornets split the season series with rivals Thomasville and Statesville, with the former suffering its only SPC loss to Salisbury.
In addition to his basketball prowess, Hilliard was recognized as the SPC Player of the Year for baseball. Under coach Charles Hellard, he helped the Hornets achieve an 11-5 record. During the summer, he showcased his skills with the Rowan County American Legion teams, coached by Joe Ferebee. In 1972, Hilliard led the team with a batting average of .323, and in 1973, he continued to excel, boasting a 22-game hitting streak and accumulating significant RBIs.
Although Hilliard was drafted by the Braves in June 1973 as the 489th pick in the 21st round, he opted not to sign, recognizing the importance of education over a modest professional contract. Instead, he played one last season with the Legion team and later pursued higher education at Mitchell College in Statesville. There, he captained both the baseball and basketball teams and helped lead the Mavericks to the Elite Eight of the Junior College World Series in Colorado in 1974.
After two years at Mitchell, Hilliard continued his baseball career at Pfeiffer University but suffered a knee injury that prematurely ended his playing days. He then earned a degree in criminal justice from Rowan Technical College. In 1977, he married Lillie Barnhardt, a graduate of A.L. Brown High School, and together they had two children: a daughter, Jennifer, and a son, Phillip.
Hilliard's professional journey included five years at Pet Dairy and a rewarding career in the North Carolina prison system, where he eventually became the superintendent of the Iredell Correctional Center in 1993. His experience in this role was complemented by his dedication to coaching youth basketball and baseball, allowing him to impart the lessons of discipline and compassion he learned from his own coaches.
The legacy of Craig Hilliard extends to his family, notably through his son Phillip, who was recognized as the Mark Norris Memorial Award winner as Rowan County Baseball Player of the Year in 2006 and received the Ludwig Award as Salisbury High’s top senior male athlete. Phillip played both baseball and football at Wingate University and currently serves as the Athletic Director at Southeast Middle School.
A memorial service for Craig Hilliard will be held at City Memorial Park Cemetery on Friday, April 3, at noon, followed by a reception at DJ’s Restaurant from 1 to 3 p.m. In honor of his contributions, memorial donations can be made to the Southeast Middle School Booster Club.
As we remember Hilliard's impactful life both on and off the field, his story is a testament to the power of sports in shaping character and community. His dedication to excellence and service will not be forgotten by those who knew him.
