Butler’s Thad Matta Shocking Retirement: What This Means for College Basketball’s Future!

In a significant shift for the Butler Bulldogs men’s basketball program, coach Thad Matta has announced his retirement after a 21-season coaching career. The decision was officially disclosed by the university on Monday. Matta, who has notable previous tenures at Xavier and Ohio State, will transition to a role as special assistant to the university's president and athletic director.
“After taking some time to reflect following the end of the season, I have decided that the time has come for me to step away from the sidelines,” Matta stated. His emotional connection to Butler, where he played and began his coaching journey, is evident. “The love my wife, my daughters and I have for Butler is what brought us back four years ago, and it feels especially meaningful that I conclude my coaching career here. Butler has always meant more to us than just basketball — and that connection is why I’m grateful to continue working with the university and offering my help in any way I can.”
Butler is now embarking on a national search for Matta’s successor. Matta returned to Butler in the spring of 2022, bringing with him a wealth of experience after his tenure with the Buckeyes ended in 2017 due to health concerns. During his previous stint at Butler in the 2000-01 season, Matta laid the groundwork for what would become a storied program. His return was seen as a beacon of hope to stabilize and rebuild the team.
However, the Bulldogs faced challenges under Matta’s leadership during this second tenure. The team never finished higher than seventh in the Big East Conference and was unable to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. They did manage to make postseason appearances in the NIT and the CBC, but expectations for a significant revival remained largely unfulfilled. Matta's record at Butler stands at 63 wins and 68 losses, with a conference play record of 39 wins and 55 losses.
Before returning to Butler, Matta enjoyed considerable success at Ohio State, amassing a remarkable 337-123 record over 13 seasons. His accomplishments there include leading the Buckeyes to nine NCAA Tournament appearances, with two trips to the Final Four and one appearance in the Elite Eight. Matta also made his mark at Xavier, where he compiled a record of 78-23 and qualified for the NCAA Tournament in each of his three seasons.
In total, Matta leaves college coaching with an impressive overall record of 502 wins and 223 losses, which includes eight combined conference regular-season championships. His teams advanced to the NCAA Tournament 13 times, with two Final Four runs and one national championship appearance. He has received multiple honors throughout his career, including three Big Ten Coach of the Year awards, one Atlantic-10 Coach of the Year award, and one Midwestern Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year honor.
The Bulldogs currently have a roster of 12 players with remaining eligibility, including four starters: Finley Bizjack (17.1 points per game), Jamie Kiser (9.7), Drayton Jones (6.3), and Azavier Robinson (6.1). The program's future will hinge on the next head coach's ability to harness this talent while reigniting the passion and success Butler fans expect.
As Butler enters this new chapter, the search for a new leader will undoubtedly shape the direction of the program in the coming years, as they look to return to the NCAA Tournament and reclaim their spot among the nation’s elite basketball teams.
