Shocking Twist: Georgia Stanway Shines as Williamson's Fitness Fiasco Leaves 2 Stars in Danger!

This season has been a challenging one for young midfielder Grace Clinton, who has seen her promising trajectory somewhat stall after a remarkable breakout. Following a successful loan at Tottenham that earned her her first England caps, Clinton returned to Manchester United for a stellar campaign. However, her transfer to Manchester City last summer has not gone as planned, especially when you consider that fellow player Park, who moved in the opposite direction, has thrived at United and emerged as one of Europe’s top attacking talents.

Clinton, now 22 years old, has faced significant obstacles, including injuries that have sidelined her since joining City. Upon her arrival, she dealt with a minor injury that hampered her early performance. A subsequent knock in October ruled her out of England’s first matches following the Euro 2025 tournament. Despite being fit since then, Clinton has struggled to secure playing time in City’s league-leading squad, managing only two starts in the Women’s Super League this season.

This lack of game time has had implications for her role with the Lionesses. Although she was included in the 25-player squad for a national camp this month, she was omitted from the 23-player matchday squad for the game against Ukraine on Tuesday. Clinton also didn’t see any action in the following match against Iceland, leading coach Sarina Wiegman to address her lack of minutes during pre-match discussions.

"She can't really control it. What she can control is her own development and taking responsibility for her development, and that's what she's doing," Wiegman stated. "She’s working really hard, and we have these conversations because, of course, for me, she's in a part of her journey where she really needs the minutes."

Wiegman added, "She’s responded really well. We also had that conversation last camp, because at that point she came back from injury and didn't get that many minutes. We have conversations all the time, and so far she has responded really well because she wants to improve and she wants to show what she can do, of course."

Clinton’s situation is compounded by the limited number of games City has this season due to an absence from European competitions. The competition for a spot on the England squad is especially fierce, making her path to regular playing time even more difficult.

The silver lining for Clinton is that 2024 isn’t a major tournament year, which means her current lack of playing time won’t have immediate devastating consequences for her career. There is potential for a different scenario next season when City is expected to have a fuller schedule, providing Clinton with opportunities to showcase her talents.

Nonetheless, it is undeniably a frustrating time for this young player. At a crucial juncture in her career, missing out on valuable playing time could impact her development. Clinton and her supporters can only hope that opportunities will arise, allowing her to regain her momentum and demonstrate her capabilities on the field.
