You Won't Believe How This $1 Million Funding Will Transform Dental Care in Georgia!

ATLANTA, March 4, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- In a significant step toward improving healthcare access in Georgia, the Georgia Dental Association (GDA) has expressed its appreciation for the recent legislative action that has secured crucial funding for dental care across the state. The Georgia House of Representatives, the Georgia Senate, and Governor Brian Kemp have signed the Amended Fiscal Year (AFY) 2026 budget into law, which includes essential investments aimed at enhancing dental services, particularly for underserved and rural communities.

The budget allocates $150,000 to the Georgia Mission of Mercy (GMOM) program and $3.2 million to support rural health clinics. These funding priorities, which GDA has championed, aim to fortify Georgia's oral health safety net, addressing the pressing need for accessible dental care in areas that often face significant barriers.

"Securing these funds is a win for patients and communities who face barriers to dental care,"

said GDA President Dr. Peter Shatz. He emphasized that the Georgia Mission of Mercy program plays a vital role in providing dental care to underserved Georgians, while financial support for rural clinics ensures that residents can receive care closer to home. Dr. Shatz added,

"We appreciate the General Assembly's commitment to oral health as a vital component of overall health."

Since its inception in 2011, the Georgia Mission of Mercy has mobilized volunteer dentists and dental professionals to deliver free dental services to those in need. The program has provided over $6.1 million in dental care through various events, alleviating pain, treating infections, and reducing the burden on emergency rooms and public health systems. These efforts highlight the importance of community-driven initiatives in addressing healthcare shortages, particularly in rural areas.

Despite these advancements, Georgia continues to grapple with a shortage of dental professionals, especially in rural regions. Approximately 40 counties in Georgia have one or no practicing dentists, which underscores the need for funding directed towards rural health clinics. The allocated $3.2 million will assist in expanding access in these areas, where geographic and economic barriers often inhibit residents from seeking dental care.

Throughout the budget process, the GDA collaborated with key lawmakers to stress the significance of accessibility in oral health care. This coalition included Chairman Matt Hatchett, Chairman Blake Tillery, Representative Darlene Taylor, and Senator Ben Watson, all of whom recognized the intricate relationship between dental health and broader issues such as workforce productivity and chronic disease management.

"The AFY 2026 budget reflects a shared understanding that access to dental care matters,"

stated Dr. Shatz. He expressed optimism about future collaborations with state leaders to ensure that all Georgians have the opportunity to receive necessary dental care, reinforcing the idea that oral health is integral to overall well-being.

The Georgia Dental Association (GDA) continues to advocate for policies and funding that support oral health initiatives across the state. As the trusted voice of dentistry in Georgia, the GDA is dedicated to creating a supportive environment for dentists, equipping them with the resources and education necessary to provide high-quality dental care. Their mission extends beyond advocacy; it includes inspiring dental professionals to improve lives through accessible oral healthcare.

As the impacts of this funding materialize, the ongoing partnership among healthcare providers, lawmakers, and community organizations will be crucial in tackling the barriers to dental care in Georgia, ensuring that every citizen has the opportunity for a healthier future.
