What is Hyrox?

Hyrox is an indoor fitness race blending endurance running with functional strength exercises. Participants engage in a grueling course that consists of eight one-kilometer runs, each followed by a series of high-intensity exercises, including sled pushes and pulls, rowing, burpee broad jumps, farmer’s carries, sandbag lunges, and wall balls.

Christina Heinrich, the owner of F45 Training Bridgeland Calgary, emphasizes the race's intensity, stating, “Everything is back to back and in between each session is a one-kilometer run.” She refers to Hyrox as “one of the hardest fitness competitions that we have seen in the fitness industry in a very long time.” The race offers various divisions for professionals, beginners, doubles, and relays, making it theoretically accessible to a broad range of fitness levels.

The Claims Under Scrutiny

Promotional messaging surrounding Hyrox often asserts that training for the event can transform one’s fitness and label it as the “world’s best fitness test.” To delve deeper into this claim, the Calgary Journal analyzed promotional content, conducted interviews with fitness professionals, and reviewed peer-reviewed fitness research.

Experts like Heinrich argue that the label of Hyrox as “the ultimate test of strength, endurance, and grit” is more about the event's intensity rather than an objective claim of superiority. “Training for something gives us a goal, and then we’re able to achieve that,” she points out, noting the motivational aspect of preparing for such a challenge.

She explains that the real benefits stem from the training process itself, which can lead to improvements in cardiovascular health, endurance, and functional strength. However, she warns that the physically and mentally demanding nature of Hyrox can lead to severe consequences for those who don't properly prepare. “If they don’t train for it… lots of throwing up in the races,” Heinrich adds, emphasizing the importance of readiness.
