The upcoming AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, starting Monday, marks a significant moment for the United Kingdom as it seeks to showcase the transformative potential of artificial intelligence. According to the British government, the summit aims to emphasize how AI can drive economic growth, create new job opportunities, enhance public services, and ultimately deliver widespread benefits globally.

Leading the UK delegation is Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy and AI Minister Kanishka Narayan, who are determined to highlight the ways AI can enhance daily life, from aiding medical professionals in faster diagnoses to helping teachers tailor educational experiences. The ministers argue that AI should serve as an engine of renewal, capable of streamlining services so that local councils can deliver solutions in minutes while equipping businesses to generate the next wave of quality employment.

"This summit is an important moment in determining how we can work together with our international partners to unlock the full benefits and potential of AI, while baking in robust and fair safety standards that protect us all,"

said Lammy in a statement prior to the summit.

The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has characterized India and the UK as "natural tech partners." This partnership is evident through the growing presence of major Indian software companies like Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), and Wipro across the UK. Narayan underscored this collaborative spirit, stating, "AI is the defining technology of our generation, and we're determined to make sure it delivers for everyone." He elaborated that AI can reduce waiting times for services, revolutionize public sectors, create new employment avenues, and provide struggling communities a pathway to renewed prospects.

Moreover, Narayan emphasized the UK’s ambition to lead globally in shaping an AI landscape that is equitable. "We are totally aligned in making sure that the people of Britain and the people of India get to not just look at AI being built by others but build AI and benefit from AI directly," he remarked. His itinerary also includes a visit to Bengaluru to further explore collaborative efforts between the two nations in harnessing breakthrough technology.

The UK and India’s joint investments in cutting-edge research are considerable, reportedly amounting to tens of millions of pounds. These funds aim to develop advancements in various sectors, including improved battery technologies, next-generation telecoms designed for rural communities, and genomic medicine targeted at rare diseases. In fact, UK firms have generated more than £47.5 billion in revenue from their operations in India, highlighting the economic importance of this relationship.

As part of the AI Impact Summit, the UK is anticipated to announce new support for an African Language Hub, set to enable AI technologies to function in 40 African languages. This initiative aims to enhance inclusivity and accessibility of AI for millions across the continent. This announcement will form part of a broader £100 million initiative called the AI for Development (AI4D) program, specifically designed to ensure developing nations can fully capitalize on the AI revolution.

Additional initiatives under the AI4D program include the establishment of the Asian AI4D Observatory, which will focus on promoting responsible AI innovation and governance throughout South and Southeast Asia, and the AI4D Compute Hub at the University of Cape Town, which aims to provide African innovators with the computational power necessary to transform their ideas into impactful solutions.

The AI Impact Summit in New Delhi is being hailed as the first international gathering of its kind focused on artificial intelligence in the Global South, built around the three guiding principles of people, planet, and progress.
